Ramonet Bonanza - Flight 3 Moving back in time a little more with a range of vintages and plots and a surprising outcome. 4th place: Ramonet Montrachet 1981 (1x voted 2nd), labeled under the wife’s family name Ramonet-Prudhon. Fresh fruit lovers need not apply as this was all about complex aged white character of seashells, caramel and some aged botrytis notes of saffran and dried apricot. Interestingly it did relay the complexity that Montrachet achieves with thirty years under the belt. 3rd place: Ramonet Montrachet 1983 (1x voted 1st, 2x 2nd). According to people in the know one of his best Montrachets but based on this bottle I couldn’t quite relate to that. Similar to the 1981 a fairly pronounced savoury profile but with more vibrant orchard fruit and along the lines of the 1994 a nice herbacious undertone that gave it crunch and freshness. 2nd place: Ramonet Batard 1979 (2x voted 1st, 3x 2nd). Showing way more youthful than the 1981 and 1983 but it is the better white vintage after all, and not just because it’s my birthyear . Punchy griddled pineapples, honey, yet showing distinctly less botrytis than most 79s with a herbacious note suggests early picking. Stunning wine from a pristine bottle. 1st place: Ramonet Bienvenues-Batard 1987 (5x voted 1st, 2x 2nd). Seriously, what a wine - rich fruited, candied peach, tangerine peel, seaweed, minty herbs, beeswax. Stunning richness, density and length but balanced by a greenish lifegiving acid spine. Just like the 1990 it just defies any notion of vintage and in this case plot as well, only top vintage Carillon BBM reaches this level. Loved to see the power of blind in full force again as I don’t think this would have ranked first when those intimidating Montrachets labels would have been staring at you. Ramonet Bonanza - Flight 1 From a recent superb tasting that featured 19 Ramonet grand crus of which 10 Montrachets. All served blind with only the host (not me) knowing all the wines. 3rd place: Ramonet Batard Montrachet 1999 (2x voted 1st, 1x 2nd). It needed quite a bit of air but then it showed a terrific fruitforward profile with pineapple, spicy ginger, lime panna cotta and spearmint. Great acid and mineral backbone, at the start of its drinking window. I guessed it to be a Chevalier. 2nd place (2x voted 1st, 3x voted 2nd): Ramonet Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet 1999. Showing distinctly older than the other two wines. Coming very strongly out of the gates with crazy complexity of candied nuts, dried tropical fruit, chrysanthemum, old wood, caramel and cinnamon. Quite fat for a BBM and the only wine this flight that went downhill in the glass with aeration. I thought it was a a much older Montrachet for its complexity and density. 1st place: Ramonet Montrachet 1999 (4x voted 1st, 4x 2nd). Showing at least at decade younger than it was but this was a total showstopper. It needed more air than the Batard but with time emerged a large scaled wine on both nose and palate with Montrachet opulence and complexity. Very rare to have such a voluptuous tropical fruit driven wine with a preserved lemon type of minerality and bright cool acidity. Very very proper and I called at least one wine correctly as it felt it just had to be the full monty. It was truly not obvious to identify the flight’s vintage as the BBM showed distinctly older. Was leaning towards 2008 as some of the Ramonets show quite a bit of age and they have this acid streak these wines displayed. When the wines are this good I am so happily wrong in all my blind tasting efforts. Ramonet Bonanza - Flight 2. No less than three Montrachets accompanied by a Batard, all served blind. 4th place: Ramonet Batard 1988 (no votes). Very unusual showing with dried banana and butterscotch. Rich and sweet without the fine acids and lightness of this typically very succesful Ramonet vintage. I was thinking 1976. In other words: not a representative bottle. 3rd place: Ramonet Montrachet 1993 (1x voted 2nd). A white vintage I have come to seriously appreciate over the last few years. Similar to some of the 1993 Meursaults there is a distinct savoury character of salty veal broth and umami mushrooms. It was a bit shy in terms of fruits with a fairly spiky lemony acidity at the back end. I was guessing it to be a BBM from a leaner year like 91 as it didn’t have the heft and concentration of a Montrachet. 2nd place: Ramonet Montrachet 1994 (2x voted 1st, 6x 2nd). The power of blind tasting, not a single soul considered this to be from a weaker year as all guesses went straight to top vintage Montrachet. Breathtaking floral aromatics of lilies, chamomile and fennel flowers. A lovely touch of greenness on the palate with lime leaf and fresh herbs with a cool citrusy fruit profile. Airy, pure and precise. My wine of the vintage with some distance to my number two spot which is occupied by Niellon’s Chevy 1994. 1st place: Ramonet Montrachet 1990 (6x voted 1st, 1x 2nd). Monumental wine offering everything you look for: strong Puligny-esque notes of white flowers and lime cutting through the richness of the mint-infused tropical fruits. The acid backbone is truly unheard of in this ripe vintage. I am puzzled how one can make a wine like this as it behaved like a top end 1996 for its acid/ripeness tension. Puligny First - 2013 Vintage tasting. Summary and Conclusions. Benjamin Leroux Batard Monrachet 2013 (magnum) (11x voted WOTN, 4x 2nd). For me the best wine he makes across his entire range, may be a result of owning the land and controlling the end to end result? Either way, I was very happy for this to come out on top in this fully blind tasting. @naradmuni1966. Domaine Ramonet Batard Montrachet 2013 (6x voted WOTN, 10x 2nd). A bit too opulent for my preference but you can’t fault it for its expressiveness and radiating fruitiness. Drouhin Corton Charlemagne 2013 (magnum) (4x voted WOTN, 1x 2nd). A wine that was able to win over the hearts from from natural wine lovers to obstinate intellectuals and everyone in between. Classic. Honorable mention to Paul Pillot Chassagne La Romanée which ended fourth, the highest ratest 1er cru and leaving a few grand crus behind. Spellbinding acid definition, more angular than most Puligny out there. At the end of the tasting I asked the 23 participants to rate the vintage on a scale of 5 and the average was 4.19. Although I wouldn’t go that high personally I do think these wines were enjoyable and these good producers made the most out of the vintage. An interesting observation is that I witnessed very little overt botrytis notes whereas that seemed to be more prominent a few years back. Which is the reverse of 2010 where only now the botrytis surfaces. Although none of the bottles showed particularly harsh or inaccessible but a lot of wines would benefit from more cellaring for oak to integrate and reduction to recede. On the other hand Ganevat was the only wine past its prime and both Ponsot’s Corton Charlemagne and Chartron’s Puligny Clos du Caillerets were showing the most developed and would probably best enjoyed sooner than later. Soon to be followed up with the 2014s, let’s see how this much hailed vintage will perform. In blind we trust.

Puligny First 2013 - Final flight: three shades of Batard. Bachelet-Monnot Batard Montrachet 2013 (1x voted 1st, 8x 2nd). Cuminy oak, smoke, primary citrusy and white Asian pear fruits. Well built, needs more time to develop which I often find the case for their Batard. Domaine Ramonet - Batard Montrachet 2013 (11x voted 1st, 7x 2nd). Tremendously powerful and opulent expression. Tropical fruits with a thick oily palate with a touch of alcoholic heat and bitterness on the back end. Classic big and fruitforward Batard, dressed to impress. Benjamin Leroux - Batard Montrachet 2013 (magnum) (11x voted 1st, 8x voted 2nd). The second time this wine came out on top of a tasting. It actually originates from a domaine owned plot, right below DRC’s Monty on the Chassagne side. The lightness of touch that was slightly lacking in the Ramonet was showing here in spades: bright acids, gentle floral nuance and mild stony reductive undertones on top of a well defined palate of spiced pear and lime. Participants were given the hint that all three wines were from the same grand cru appellation. Twelve (out of 23) correctly guessed Batard Montrachet with Chevalier Montrachet and Montrachet each picking up four guesses. Although I do love my 2004 white burgs, this Ramonet Batard was quite tight and primary. Even with decanting and warming up it never really opened up. The easy thing to say would be that it needs more time but it was hard to see through.
