51 years ago today.... On July 28, 1968, while in the midst of recording the White Album, the Beatles and photographer Don McCullin got together for the famous, and productive, 'Mad Day Out' photo session. ---------------------- ------------ ------------------------- ------------ #Beatles #TheBeatles #PaulMcCartney #JohnLennon #GeorgeHarrison #RingoStarr #popculture #DonMcCullin #MadDayOut #1968 #photosession #whitealbum #sixties #60s #FabFour #John #Paul #George #Ringo #Lennon #McCartney #Harrison #Starr #1960s #theSixties #otd #London #BeatlesHistory #BeatleMania
Over the decades Don McCullin has wandered the world, from one atrocity to the next, documenting humanity and inhumanity. In between he has turned his lens on Britain: on the poverty of Bradford and London’s East End; the humour of the country at play; the naked beauty of the landscape around his home in Somerset. A new retrospective of McCullin’s work at Tate Britain is enthralling, beautiful, and emotionally exhausting. It invites us into a world that, to most of us, is totally alien, and gives us time to imagine what it is like to be there. To read more about McCullin, who is as interested in the people fighting wars as the people caught in their rip tide, follow the link in our bio. #photography #exhibition #donmccullin @tate #tatebritain #warphotography
Don McCullin. Probably the most impactful and historically important body of work I’ve ever seen. What a photographer. Beyond my words. See for yourself. Shell-Shock. @donaldmccullin
It was #donmccullin pictures in the 1970’s Sunday Magazines that played a large part in my path to becoming a photographer, his work has been a continual influence and he has been one of the most enduring, compelling and inspirational practitioners in modern photography. His work defined a genre and influenced the way our generation viewed the world and humanity. #legend
There are still tickets available for my talk about directing the documentary 'McCullin in Kolkata' Sir Don McCullin’s journey to photograph the street people of Kolkata. For those interested this will be on July 1st, 7.30pm in my local town of Ashbourne as part of Ashbourne Arts Festival. To find out more and to book go to the link in my bio above. I’ll be sharing the behind the scenes stories of how we made the film and the many challenges we faced from initially planning to film Don in Lebanon until ISIS moved into the area and it was too dangerous then filming him photographing Roman buildings in Turkey then there was a coup. Once filming began it wasn’t all plain sailing as the crew were threatened by Indian Mafia. McCullin in Kolkata, a short documentary directed by photographer, filmmaker and Canon Ambassador Clive Booth, documents legendary British photojournalist Sir Don McCullin’s trip to shoot the street people of Kolkata. It uncovers the colour and chaotic energy of the city, as well as revealing the veteran lensman’s fascinating views on photography and life. With a career that spans over 60 years, Sir Don McCullin is one of the most respected documentary photographers of all time and has recently had a major retrospective exhibition at the Tate Modern. He has been filmed discussing his photography many times during his long career, but rarely has he been shown shooting in the field. So when plans were mooted to produce a documentary showing him in action, photographer and filmmaker Clive Booth knew he had a rare opportunity that would make the photographic world sit up and take note. The question was, where did Don want to turn his lens? He said, “We should go to Kolkata. It’s the most unbelievable city in the world.” @canonuk @canoneurope @ashbournefestival #canonambassador #liveforthestory #mccullin #donmccullin #sirdonmccullin #photojournalism #photography #photographer #kolkata #india #travel #travelohotography #canon
This post-punk album fuses throbbing synths, angular guitar riffs, and industrial drumming resulting in a dystopian classic. The front cover features an iconic image ( by Don McCullin) of Derry youths escaping a tear gas attack by the British Army in 1971. Amazing album.
