Italian door...? My first time installing this type of door with SOSS style hinge and vinyl wrapped MDF. It took all day to install but you don’t have to paint them. So, I've been head down, trying to hit some deadlines with my current clients. Had a huge win today with the installation of these doors. They went in without any problems, perfect reveals, and the double doors perfectly aligned. For someone who rarely hangs doors, it's an amazing feeling. I made the doors after installing the jambs and casing. Templated the openings, and sized the doors to fit. My father told me about a job he had in the 80s where he had to hang a lot of doors in a basement that he finished. Just after completion, he discovered that the lumberyard carried pre-hung doors and he was shocked/dismayed. Like many carpenters now, if I I hang a few doors a year, that’s a lot. Most doors come with the frames and hinges fitted to them in a shop. There are decent cheap jigs you can buy for routing hinges- it seems like they’re always getting broken or lost. I made one for this door from 5/4 primed pine. I marked the hinge and cut the 5/8” radius corners with a 1 1/4” drill bit. The edge of a hinge lead near the pin is not flush with the door - it is inset to allow the strike edge of the door to swing clear of the jamb. To create that inset, I ripped 1/4” off that edge of the jig before screwing a fence onto it. I clamped it to the door and routed the hinge mortises with a top-bearing router bit. The shop @hustonlumbersupply had put a 3° bevel on both edges of this door so I built the jig with a matching angle. Also, check out The Door Hanger’s Handbook by @garymkatz. It’s very helpful. Yesterday was filled with a lot of frustration! Don’t recommend installing a barn door by yourself...but hey... barn door is installed!!! Still need to touch up paint on the extra holes I made... see second pic... and install the bottom guide, but it’s in! I am contemplating installing the bottom guide now or waiting til I do floors and baseboards... man projects truly have the trickle effect!!! Just when I feel like I can check something off the list... I add two more things to the list! Okay they were already on the list, but now they just moved themselves higher! My whole house has kinda trickled into one big project at the moment! Anybody else living in one giant project!? Happy Saturday friends!
