Are YOU getting enough sleep?

Last night I had 8 1/2 hours of sleep and still woke up tired! I could tell my body was craving another hour of sleep to feel fully rested but I needed to get up and start my day. Typically 8 1/2 hrs is more than enough (7 1/2 hours is good when I'm not training hard) but as my mileage increases and I add in strength days, my body is having a hard time adapting because I haven't adjusted my sleep schedule. .

With all of the training plans, nutrition plans, gym and strength and rest days etc I think we forget about adjusting our sleep to compensate for the added stress our bodies and mind take on during a training cycle. An easy rule of thumb to go by is to add 1 minute of extra sleep for every mile you run a week. For example: if you run 40 miles a week then you will add an extra 40 minutes of sleep. Sound like a lot? Yes...I admit I have not been increasing my sleep by 35-40 minutes a night (I've been running around 35ish miles a week lately) but I plan to go to bed an extra 15 minutes early this week and slowly keep adding minutes by going to bed earlier.
