The debut by this fine band. I would say this is my least favourite album of the 80’s by Nuclear Assault and that is saying something about the quality of this band because it is a great album and in the 80s they only got better. This is their only classic album that was recorded at Pyramid Studios in Ithaca, upstate New York - and it does show as it sounds quite different to the albums recorded at Music Grinder in LA. While this recording is pretty good and you can hear everything quite clearly, it does sound terribly thin. However, there are no complaints with the songs on here, they are great. Opener Live, Suffer, Die is about has heavy and fast as anything else around in 1986. The songs there on in are mostly mid paced and to the point and I would say my favourites are Nuclear War, Sin, and Betrayal. Closer Brain Death is pretty cool, it’s a bit longer than the rest and has almost a psychedelic feel to it towards the end. It could be also argued that this album has a crossover feel to it as well. It also contains arguably the seminal 80s thrash album cover by Ed Repka. Simply the greatest Sepultura album of the 80’s. As great as Beneath The Remains is, and as much as I like it, it is not better than this. The transition from the silliness of Morbid Visions to this: a streamlined display of thrashing rage that casts aside nearly every other band on the planet, is simply breathtaking. Sure, one could argue it’s just a re-write of Chemical Warfare, but From The Past Comes The Storms is simply one of the greatest songs that no one seems to have heard, ha ha! What a scorcher this is. The ferocious intensity of this song is just unbelievable and the solo Andreas delivered here is maybe his best ever. What sets this album apart is, while inspired by the US, Swiss and German thrash heavyweights, it does not sound like any one of those bands. A genuinely oppressive, bleak and claustrophobic Discharge inspired set of songs, this album is not for the faint hearted. But it showcases a brilliant set of catchy, remorseless gloriously heavy songs, delivered by a band focused and driven to make their mark on the World Stage. And apparently the majority of it was written by former guitarist Jairo Guedz. To The Wall, Inquisition Symphony, Screams Behind The Shadows and Rest In Pain are seriously intense, hard heavy songs that simply do not seem to age. This album sounds as fresh and vital as it did the day it was released in 1987 and is undoubtedly the best album I’ve posted this week. And considering those other albums I’ve written about, it really does say something for this album - an absolute enduring classic. This is the 1990 pressing and not the recent repressing that looks exactly like it.
