Architect- Richard Neutra - 1953 - 1100 Eagle Vista Dr. Los Angeles, CA 90041 . Richard Neutra was already well known for revolutionary visions of California modernist indoor-outdoor living by the early 1950s when this building was envisioned. The Eagle Rock Recreation Center greatly elaborates Neutra’s vernacular of his residential cannon. The building can be compared to a pavilion, which can be cranked open to the outdoors. The walls are built like double-hung windows which slide open vertically. Neutra’s signature “spider leg” steel beams protrude from under the roof supporting it weightlessly. After being threatened with demolition in the 1980s, the Eagle Rock Recreation Center was designated a Historic-Cultural Monument. As is often the case it is much in need of funds to restore it. Dionne Neutra who was project architect and partner to his father said of the project, "We wanted to be able to open the building like an open-air pavilion, but we also had to design it like an indoor basketball court. So, we ended up designing a series of walls that can rise up like a double-hung window with about 8 feet of clearance.”
