A dangerous crossing. A kangaroo island echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus), crosses a dirt road on Kangraoo Island. A sub-species of the mainland species, they are only found (as the name implies) on Kangaroo Island (South Australia). The Kangaroo Island short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus). While spending some time in South Australia, I was fortunate enough to run into one of Australia’s most iconic mammals on an afternoon hike. Having only seen a few echidnas in my lifetime, this was an especially rare find as it is lighter in colour than the mainland subspecies, and also has longer and thinner spines.

Already having a blast in Australia. It was great to be able to move this Echidna off the road! Coolest animal ever!
