A dangerous crossing.
A kangaroo island echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus), crosses a dirt road on Kangraoo Island.
A sub-species of the mainland species, they are only found (as the name implies) on Kangaroo Island (South Australia). Listed as endangered, key threats include habitat destruction and fragmentation, predation by feral cats, and road mortality.

The Kangaroo Island short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus). While spending some time in South Australia, I was fortunate enough to run into one of Australia’s most iconic mammals on an afternoon hike. Having only seen a few echidnas in my lifetime, this was an especially rare find as it is lighter in colour than the mainland subspecies, and also has longer and thinner spines.
