Heading to holiday for a month so picked one last harvest of anything we can scarf down before we go. Should have been packing the last bits but the haul was too pretty not to take a pic of Made a big salad, sautéed squash for lunch and packed a bunch of cucumbers for airplane snacks. Lots of pansies and yarrow to dry to use when we return as well. Excited for the adventure but will def miss the garden and veggies!

When it’s not even Friday, but the week is already pretty much perfect.
What a huge honor for @rootedgarden to design and install this garden for Renna @bijoux_dassemblage and her family. This used to be a spot for her children to play and now it’s all hers!
Renna, thank you so much for trusting us with your space. I couldn’t love it more and can’t wait for you to say “goodbye” to grocery herbs and greens and so much more because it’s all outside in your kitchen garden.
A huge to the team for making this happen in the Houston July heat.
Give me a double tap if you think Monday to Thursday should always look like this. ❤️

What’s the worst time to go on holiday? Right before your peaches ripen
I’m going away for two weeks to visit family in the Czech Republic and leaving the garden (and the almost ripe peaches ) in the capable hands of my husband.
I’ll also be taking a break from this space so that I can be fully present with my dear ones. I won’t take a break from gardening though, since my parents’ garden is full of edibles too (I’ll put a link to a video tour of the garden in my stories). See you in 2 weeks!
July 2019, April 2019 and February 2018. This backyard bio dome is activated! The horse trough wicking bed plus the ferro cement raised bed seem to be acting like a battery bank, holding on to the heat and releasing it in the night. You can feel the plants growing when you stand in here.

We found some HUGE tromboncino squash under the trellis! When I tried to take a pick the girls started an impromptu jam session. I think we have a new girl band on our hands

I like the view from here.
Final post from @seedtofork and her takeover today and I’m here for all of it.
After succession planting, or maybe before, there are garden rules.
First, there are no rules! This is your garden, so you make the rules. Consider those rules merely guidelines - and then experiment. Experimenting is your best teacher. And time. Because gaining knowledge takes years.
Commit to your garden. It’s a relationship. You get out what you put into it. It’s the thing I spend the most time with when it’s not snowing, and that’s quite honestly why it looks the way it does.
The best organic pest management tools are your eyes and your hands. Be curious. Look for insects or their damage. Identify them first and then decide what to do. Buckets of soapy water are our go to for removing unwanted insects, their larvae and hungry caterpillars.
Priorities. Be clear with your garden intentions. Grow what you like to eat, not what will look good in a photograph. Okay, maybe grow some of each, but as pragmatists who want to feed ourselves for a long as possible throughout the year, taste trumps looks over here.
Love your soil, and your soil will love you back. If there was one place to focus your limited time and resources it should always be the soil. Your soil is at the root of all you do in the garden. Feed it well, and it will feed you in return.
Plant flowers to attract beneficial insects (and butterflies). Zinnia, gem marigolds, nasturtiums, and sweet alyssum are my favorite flowers to interplant with veggies.
Create a seating area in your garden, preferably in the middle of the beautiful landscape you’ve created. It makes for a lovely outdoor room and family gathering spot.
Dream big but start small. The biggest mistake would be to take on too much too fast. It can be exhausting. Pace yourself. Building a garden takes time. Enjoy the journey.
Meg, what a treat to have you and all your wisdom here. I’ve loved hosting you today and can’t wait to see what seeds you plant next!
