First and foremost we extend our deepest sympathies to the family devastated by this tragedy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our frustration centres not on the event itself, but more the discussion and reaction it has sparked. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This isolated incident has created a reactionary and emotional discussion around Breed Specific Legislation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Mainstream media focused on the dog’s breed, instead of talking about factors that can lead to aggressive behaviour or about responsible pet ownership. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since this news we have received 38 separate surrender enquiries. All of which have been for staffy or bull breed dogs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Any dog, of any size, breed or mix of breeds has the potential to cause harm. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes, genetic predispositions are a factor in animal behaviour, however the impact of the environment and learnings are just as, if not more, critical. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What does reduce incidents of dog bites? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ EDUCATION. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Educating people that their dog is growling not because they‘re naughty, or ‘dominant’, but because they’re frightened. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And that instead of punishing them for growling, we should find out what they are trying to tell us and help them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Dogs are always talking to us through body language and with some education, you too can listen to what your dog is saying. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We need to educate our children about how to tell when a pet is uncomfortable and to respect their boundaries. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We need to teach consent. Yes, consent from our pets. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the ‘more intelligent species’, we need to be more self-aware of how WE act towards, and force interactions between, pets. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Pets are not disposable objects you can just get rid of when they no longer suit you. They are for life and they feel emotion and heartbreak just like we do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you agree then please stand with us.
