Leadership Wisdom. Employees quit when the relationship with their direct leader no longer includes valuable feedback.
☝️ Lack of feedback, over time, erodes the trust between employee and leader.
✌ Lack of feedback is a failure of the leader, not the employee.
Everyone needs feedback. Even the expert on your team is still learning something...and therefore needs feedback on how they are doing.
Saying “Good Morning” and “see ya later” does not count as feedback. Feedback is honest and direct about their performance or behavior.
Feedback is critical to everyone. You can’t give feedback if you haven’t fleet expectations. One reason leaders fail to give feedback is because they failed to set clear expectations and giving feedback will expose that fact. Nothing worse than giving an employee feedback about something they didn’t know they were supposed to be doing. So set goals, set expectations so YOU CAN give meaningful feedback.

Time to shift from giving...
* Feedback - backward looking evaluation of the past action/behavior. Things that can’t be changed
To
* Feedforward - forward looking creation of new possibilities of action/behavior.
Ok, both of these are needed. You’re not really gonna ditch one for the other. However, leaders typically spend more time evaluating the past because it’s easier, it’s concrete. “Remember that thing you did? Stop doing that.” Even though most leaders hate giving feedback, it’s uncomfortable and they fear someone will get upset. Those same leaders struggle even more with feedforward because it feels like it takes more time. Ain’t nobody got time for that!
But you do. Feedforward isn’t about you telling the employee what to do in the future. It’s about helping the employee create a new path. Having them explore what are new ways of doing and being differently. Don’t do the heavy lifting yourself, let them do it.
Not only will you empower them to make positive change for their future, but you engage them in taking accountability because they owned coming up with the idea.
So shift the percent of time you are giving feedback versus feedforward. You set a percentage that feels good, then over time find the right balance for you.
