After leaving Scotland, we headed south to England to spend a couple days with our favorite English friends. We explored the Cotswolds and found St. Nicholas Church, hidden along a country road. Established in 1157, I loved that it was filled with wild English flowers.

This colourful gem is St Andrew's Church in Castle Combe. The lovely church was first built in the 13th century and has been continually extended and added to since. Lavenham's grade I listed Church of St Peter and St Paul, in the eastern English county of Suffolk, seen towering to the heavens and fronted with copious topiary on Thursday afternoon. Although in small part dating from 1340, most of the church was designed by John Wastell in the Late Perpendicular Gothic style and built between 1485 and 1525, coinciding with the period of Lavenham's greatest wealth from the wool trade (see my previous post). All this for a parish whose population has barely ever exceeded 2,000!. . . St Andrew's church in Alfriston (East Sussex) is remarkable for a number of reasons. Stylistically all of one type, the church appears to have been built in a single campaign in the second half of the fourteenth century with virtually no later interventions. The plan forms an almost equilateral (or 'Greek') cross, with the transepts projecting only slightly less far from the crossing than the nave and the chancel, which are of equal lengths. Its lofty dimensions and spacious interior have earned it the nickname 'the cathedral of the South Downs.'
