Perfume | There is a stark difference between synthetic and natural perfume, for both our health and the environment. • Synthetic perfume consists of everything you will find in chemists and department stores, from the cheap bottles to the high end brands. Synthetic perfumes are made from chemically created ingredients which mimic the scent of natural extracts and are favoured by retail companies because they are cheaper. • Synthetic fragrance is known to produce side effects such as hormone disruption, metabolic disease, thyroid issues, dermatitis, asthma, hives, birth defects and free radical damage to the cells. Some have even been found to accumulate in the fat tissue, such as the breasts and have identified in breast milk. • Synthetic perfumes also contain other scary ingredients such as parabens and phthalates. Parabens perform a preservative function and have been found to effect oestrogen homeostasis and sperm development, a well as being identified as a possible promoter of breast cancer. Phthalates are used to make the aroma of synthetic perfume last longer on the clothes and skin and have been implicated in cancer, male fertility issues, birth defects and asthma. . . . So what is the alternative? • Choose to use natural perfume made of essential oils. There are lots of these on the market and plenty to choose from. • Essential oils are derived from natural sources such as plant material, and are extracted via cold pressing or steam distillation. This makes up the practice aromatherapy, which is known to have many health benefits to every organ of our body. Furthermore, the use natural products not only benefits our health, but our environment. • I can also safely say that any maker which has the foresight to produce natural perfume will not be testing their product on animals, unlike the myriad of other brands on the market.
