Speaking at the @unitednations on global drug reform has been a highlight of my year as a public health practitioner and advocate. There’s so much that goes into drug reform—just consider our ongoing opioid epidemic—the common denominator is that it all goes back to decisions—whether it be how we respond to the issues we have as a nation, who we elect into our offices, or the personal choices we make as members of society. One decision leads to another—every action has a reaction—and one good or bad decision can change the entire course of our lives.

Trauma and decision-making are almost always intertwined. One thing I know is that we ALL deal with trauma in different stages of our lives, and we should never pass judgement on anyone for how they choose to deal with theirs. What we should do is provide support to those people so they know they have better options. Prevention is also intervention. Like my fave hometown hero @realcoleworld said, #choosewisely. I feel like our community has this idea that something is wrong with us if we decide to seek therapy...or something is wrong if we call our strong friends to check on them...we’ve lost some of the greatest entertainers of our time due to drug use...we have to continue to break that stigma and give people the tools they need to heal, and lead healthy lives. We cannot do this without making efforts to tackle poverty, improving access to health, affordable housing, protecting the environment, reducing gun violence and abuse, and protecting the rights of the most marginalized communities. ✊

Hard work never goes unnoticed. ☺️ Today I received the GSD pin at work, which stands for getting stuff done. GSD is our 8th core value at @davita. This meant so much because this year I’ve struggled with Work/Life balance working full time and being @missamericany part time. Thank you DCR, my teammates and my manager for working with me in more ways than one to help me be the best version of myself inside and outside of the work place! Working in my social impact has been the biggest blessing of this year! #itonlytakesone #missnewyork
