When They See Us on @netflix created by director @ava is a must watch, no matter how painful it gets. I watched last night and then couldn’t sleep. I saw my soon to be 18 year old son’s face. I saw my 9 1/2 year old son’s face. Boys can be boys. Just not our boys; feel me! Our Black sons must be loved, believed, respected and protected; even if they aren’t ours. What happened to them was an incomprehensible injustice. One that our own justice system orchestrated against them. You will feel watching this. You will cry. You will be angry. Then I hope you’re compelled to act in some small way to help the next. There are so many cases of innocent black, brown, poc serving sentences and they’re innocent. Let’s not even discuss how many that have gotten lengthier sentences than their white counterparts committing the same crimes. The scales of justice rarely tip in their favor. We have to be the voice and the manpower to change that. To think the sitting president back then took out an $85,000 article against them requesting the death penalty be brought back for them. He didn’t know if they were truly guilty. He knew they were Black/Puerto Rican and poor. This misogynist who’s been recorded stating that he grabs women by the , had the audacity to speak out against these TEENAGERS/KIDS and they didn’t rape anyone? He’s the architect of fake news and I’m sick and tired of him. How any of you voted for this filth is beyond me. Y’all know what he thinks of most and could care less. Party over country. Let the good old boys remain in control. Well it won’t be long. The truth shall set all free just like these men were. #centralpark5 #exonerated #raisingblacksons #motherofblackboys #blacksons #blacksonsmatter #poc #iseeyou #avaduvernay
16 years exonerated!!! "We thus think about imprisonment as a fate reserved for others, a fate reserved for the "evildoers," to use a term recently popularized by George W. Bush. Because of the persistent power of racism, "criminals" and "evildoers" are, in the collective imagination, fantasized as people of color. The prison therefore functions ideologically as an abstract site into which undesirables are deposited, relieving us of the responsibility of thinking about the real issues afflicting those communities from which prisoners are drawn in such disproportionate numbers.
This is the ideological work that the prison performs—it relieves us of the responsibility of seriously engaging with the problems of our society, especially those produced by racism and, increasingly, global capitalism."

Since 1989, 27 percent of the 325 people #exonerated through #DNAtesting originally confessed to their crimes, according to a recently released study by Craig J. Trocino, a professor at the University of Miami School of Law, and director of the #MiamiLawInnocenceClinic And confessions often affect trials and sentencing. Trocino writes: “If the person is convicted at trial, he will be sentenced more severely than without the confession.” A key reason for false confessions comes down to #interrogationtactics And, in the case of minors like Richardson, Santana, #AntronMcCray 15, #YusefSalaam 15, and #KoreyWise, 16, having an adult who understands their rights in the room.
“Interrogation works basically by making the irrational seem rational, by turning the world on its head until, all of a sudden, it makes sense to you to confess to something that you didn't do,” explains Nirider, who advised on Sara Burns’ 2012 documentary, The Central Park Five. “It is perfectly #legal for #policeofficers to lie during interrogations about the evidence against a suspect. In #YusefSalaam's interrogation, the police admitted that they lied to Yusef when they were questioning him. They told Yusef his #fingerprints could be found on the jogging shorts of the victim. That’s perfectly legal in the United States.” Interrogation techniques have evolved over the past two centuries. In the 19th and into the early 20th century, police sometimes used coercion like physical violence to elicit confessions during interrogations, according to the study The Problem of False Confessions in the Post-DNA World. After a series of #SupremeCourt decisions in the 1930s and ‘40s, American police were forced to change their practices, relying instead on psychological techniques and strategies. “You gotta look at the landscape. You have to look at the fact that we’re 14, 15, 16 year old kids who’d never had involvement with the law, who had no #criminalrecord ” Santana said recently. “And these are seasoned detectives. So, going into that situation, the playing field is already unlevel.”
Santana and the other men have also #advocated to have interrogations recorded in full.
Today marks 4 years since I got out of prison, my conviction vacated. Doesn't feel like it's been that long. Since release, I've been fortunate in many ways. I've found an amazing extended family of exonerees and justice champions; I've enjoyed time with my family, especially getting to spend Christmas with my mom and grandparents; I've met a lot of great and cool people; created a music TV show; worked on a network tv show; gone to lots of awesome concerts; went to Ireland; and so much more. I'm involved in the fight against wrongful convictions, have many projects I'm working on, and try to make a difference. The road ahead looks clear. More good things on the horizon. I'm just getting started. Thank you to all my friends, and family. I love you all. As we drove to the movies yesterday I saw a billboard for “When They See Us”. I decided to share a little about the series with my 3 babies ages 5,7,11. I asked them to look up at the picture and I told them a brief sanitized synopsis of what happened in the Central Park 5 case. My 7 year old is easily the quickest of the three. She was outraged. She blurted out, “Mama that’s not right!” She wanted to know how long they were in jail. Why didn’t the police get fired? Why didn’t the boys have their parents with them? Why didn’t they believe the boys? Why didn’t people protest? Are they ok now? She wanted to see the movie. I told her it wasn’t appropriate for little kids, but I’d share a short clip.
My son, the 11 year old, was quiet. He’s usually quiet and soft spoken. When we parked the car, I played a short trailer for them. When it was done, my 7 year old was horrified. Her face said it all. My son said simply, “I don’t want to grow up. I don’t want the police to treat me this way.“ My heart immediately sank.
I quickly reassured him. I told him that he’s lucky that his parents are both lawyers and we aren’t afraid of the police. I told him that he would always be safe and that the police would never hurt him. I then told him that we work hard to make sure people are protected from things like this. I told him that when dad leaves at night to work, he’s sometimes at the police station protecting people from this sort of abuse. He went silent again.
Who knows how much of what I said sank in. We went to the theatre and watched “The Secret Life of Pets 2”. We haven’t spoken of it again. I often wonder if I give too much information to them too soon. Those doubts were quickly eliminated . I just saw an alert on social media that two boys were shot by police in Texas tonight. 13 and 15. #whentheyseeus #exonerated #lawmama #wrongfullyconvicted #centralparkfive #lawyer #lawyerlife #lawyermom #publicdefender #parenthood #trayvonmartin #tamirrice #blacklivesmatter #blackgirlmagic #blackmotherhood #policeterror #policebrutality
This is Linda Fairstein the prosecutor who knowingly convicted 5 children, 1 who actually only went down to the precent to accompany his friend. Nonetheless they all were innocent and coerced into saying they did something they didn’t do. Even when DNA evidenced proved it was no way they could have committed this crime. All she saw was black boys not children whose life were menial as long as she was able to get a high conviction rate. The trauma those babies faced, the disappointment in the system, the mental abuse and physical that they endured only to be exonerated and thrown back on the street with no accountability held from the system is a disgrace. Meanwhile this colonizing pig went on to become a multi million dollar best selling author while those kids endured heartbreaking traumas in prison. I ask that you call amazon and Barnes and nobles and ask that her books be pulled from shelves. And share the word. We as blacks bitch and moan about the wrong crap. About material bull crap and don’t support our own. I encourage you to teach our kids to read, work outside of the school system to ensure they are educated. Educate them and yourself on our rights and let them know to never speak to police or anyone without a lawyer present.
I feel she and all those involved should be held accountable for their actions and jailed as well but here’s a start. Lets focus on supporting and encouraging one another or else they will continue to rob our children of a fair chance and do what’s in their power to take them out of our homes •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
