Not all of my stories are of success or hope. There are stumbles and failures along this preservation path I am on. When I worked for the German Village Society, this house was covered in vegetation to the point I called it the secret garden. It was a secret garden, because past the overgrowth was a hidden treasure. Behind this boarded up house was a brass foundry. The brass foundry was one of the remaining remnants of the German Village historic district’s industrial history. Long story short: developer wanted to tear down the foundry and build apartments to maximize the lot. It went through commission review and they voted against demo. The developer appealed to the state review board and somehow... the local historic preservation office never thought to notify the nonprofit that was working to save this history. So... I missed my chance to be an advocate and the buildings came down. The new construction has never come to fruition, the house continue to sit vacant, and structures that could have been adapted for contemporary use/preserved to tell a fading story were lost. not every building will be saved and every loss is an opportunity to learn. This is part of why storytelling is integral to historic preservation.
