Designer Elena Amato @amato.ele / @pontobiodesign has experimented with bacterial cellulose in order to create a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging. The kind of bacteria she uses is from the leftovers of kombucha, which she gets from local producers. When dried, the material becomes stiff and robust and feels like a mixture of paper and plastic. Different pieces can be ‚glued‘ together using water. In addition to that, she created different, natural colors using spirulina, hibiscus, saffron and charcoal.
