Hi! it’s Jordan. I’m back and plan to share more about the science we are working on @cascadiaresearch. In 2018 we had a crazy idea to start using the drone to breath sample smaller whales and dolphins. Drone breath sampling has been around for a few years but mostly with large baleen whales and killer whales (shout out to @the_snotbot and @woodshole_ocean). If you look at the last video you can see that smaller animals don’t exhale very much. In November 2018 we successfully collected breath samples from the endangered population of false killer whales and a few resident pods of pilot whales. We followed this up with more attempts during our last project in April with @marecotel . Our samples are processed with different types of preservatives and are currently being analyzed at @noaa NW fisheries science center. An important aspect for this work is documenting any reactions by the animals during attempts. It might be a surprise to some but animals very aware of their surroundings and close approaches by the drone can change/disrupt their normal behavior. We’ve even observed mild reactions at 50’. All of this work is being done under NMFS permit 20605. Under this permit, we are allowed to fly to 6 feet above an animal for breath sampling. 50 feet for detailed photos and 100 feet for general drone activities. Please fly responsibly.
// the eye of a false killer whale — such a neat and beautiful species — observing this near threatened species in water and from the surface never ceases to amaze — their overwhelming size, sociable demeanor and dynamic movement throughout the water column is truly a sight to see — @canonusa @nauticamhousings
Pack Ice Orcas & Wave Washing- Type B killer whales, also known as “Pack Ice Killer Whales”, live in Antarctic waters and feed exclusively on seals. In order to catch seals who have hauled out on ice floes, Pack Ice Killer Whales engage in a dramatic cooperative hunting behavior known as wave-washing. After locating seals on ice floes by spy-hopping (“lifting their heads vertically out of the water in order to view things on the surface” Pitman & Durban, 2012), they swim together in a V-formation toward the floe in order to create a wave to wash over the floe and throw the seal into the water where it can be captured and subsequently pulled down by its hind flippers and drowned (Pitman & Durban, 2012). ⠀ @erindunglinson ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀

VOLUME UP! Thanks to Eyewitness @markgirardeau aboard @newportcoastaladventure for this incredible underwater video shot off the Orange County coast over the weekend. According to Mark, these false killer whales are a rare sight around SoCal, until recently. This was the fourth sighting this year, but previously they hadn’t been seen since 2016. Share your whale watching adventures with #abc7eyewitness!
Who wants us to make a new cetacean pin collection?! Comment what other cetaceans we should add to this group! We’re thinking we’ll do a Kickstarter! Does this false killer whale look "happy" to you? In captivity, dolphins and whales face a lack of stimulation and can resort to abnormal or even self harming behaviors. This is one incident of a dolphin jumping out of a tank at the Okichan dolphin theater in the Churaumi Aquarium. There have been similar incidents at Panama City’s Gulf World, SeaWorld Orlando and other facilities. More on why to never visit a dolphinarium is linked in our bio.
