Gyromitra esculenta (the only terrestrial mushroom I've seen in NB so far this season, aside from its relative G. korfii - I've literally spent the last six months photographing nothing but polypores and jellies). Now that the temperatures are remaining above 5°C at night (and growing consistently warmer), I should start seeing a bit more variety in the forest floor. I'm still not giving up hope on finding my first Morchella!

First time finding: Verpa bohemica! a species in the family Morchellaceae. Commonly known as the early morel or false morel. The thimble shaped cap varies in color from pale yellow to light brown. It’s surface is a fascinating maze of ribbed and wrinkled brain like convolutions. The cap hangs completely free from the top of a lighter-colored, brittle stem. The stem is easy to snap off and is hollow or contains cottony wispy fibers on the inside. Haven’t eaten this mushroom before and have heard mixed reviews on it’s edibility. As always when introducing a new species I do tons of research to verify the identification and then do a trial run where I eat a very small amount and observe how my body reacts. Have you eaten these? What’s been your experience?

Gyromitra esculenta is such a uniquely beautiful mushroom! This poisonous shroom, sometimes confused by novices as an edible morel, is so interestingly shaped. The cap folds in and out creating an undulating surface and the stem reminds me of a melted candle with drips of wax running down and leaving valleys and peaks along its side. I have both an interesting fact and a funny tale to accompany this post. First on the education side, I just learned that the amount of toxin within this fungus vary based on location and altitude. For example, it is more deadly in Europe as opposed to here. And they tend to be less toxic, if foraged in high mountains as opposed to lower elevations. This was pretty interesting to me and I wonder if it’s an epigenetic-type phenomenon influenced by its environment or perhaps they’re just completely different species not apparent to our current technologies. Please do share if you have more info on this! As for the funny tale, I found these guys among many others while hiking with friends. They had to wait for me many times along the trail, because I was completely enamored with my fungi friends and kept falling behind. Well, they saw this mushroom (the first one along the trail) and knew I’d adore it. They appreciated its funkiness and were eager to see my expression when I noticed it. So they creepily paused a few feet away and nonchalantly chatted while they waited for me to approach. Of course my reaction was just as I expected, ECSTATIC! I gasped and my already pretty big eyes bulged out like a scene from a cartoon. Later (when several other specimens dotted our trail), my friend loudly exclaimed, “look brains on rocks!” I was so pleased there weren’t small children and families nearby haha. Not the type of thing you want to hear while hiking in the great outdoors. #fungiphotography #mycologicalsociety #mrsamanita #gyromitra #falsemorel #wyomingmushroom #brainmushrooms #sciencerules #mushroomsofinstagram #fungiofinstagram #fungi #fungus #naturephotography #naturephotos #mushroompics #allthemushroomhashtags #allthattherainpromisesandmore #mushrooms #hikewyoming #travel

Wrinkled thimble-cap
I saw these early false morels today, in the same spot I saw them 2 years ago!
We don’t get this species in England so I’m super happy to see them again!
