Did you know that the “meanest man in Deadwood” Al Swearingen (often spelled Swearengen) had a twin brother? While you might guess that there would be some drawbacks to sharing a face with the infamous proprietor of the Gem Theatre/Saloon…we bet your first guess wouldn't be "Shot in the Face". In new release “Deadwood’s Al Swearingen: Manifest Evil in the Gem Theatre" author Jerry L. Bryant uncovered some amazing details into the life and times of Mr. Swearingen. We're sharing one of these wild events. (From pages 121-122, Farcountry Press) Shot in the Face "…He [Lemuel Abraham Swearingen] had left the market shortly after midnight and walked through the back door of his home very early on a Sunday morning. His pockets held about $200 from the day’s business. As soon as L. A. entered the house through the back door, he saw blinding flashes and thought he’d been punched in the face. In defense, he punched back into the darkness, but more flashes came. Then he knew he’d been hit by gunfire even though he felt no pain yet. As L. A. ran around one side of the house, the “would-be murderer” fled in the opposite direction. L. A.’s Saturday earnings remained untouched. Out front, he called for help, drawing two neighbors who took him to a doctor. L. A. had been hit four times: across the bridge of his nose and up the left eyebrow, across his temple, with a third wound on the side of his head, and the final bullet grazing the back of his skull. The furrow across his eyebrow needed the most attention, but L.A. was stitched up and sent home. He was lucky that the shots were aimed slightly sideways so that the bullets glanced across his skull.” (page 121) So ended the first weekend of October 1904 for Al Swearingen’s brother in their hometown. Al Swearingen had by then left Deadwood permanently, for parts unknown. Was one of his nefarious associates looking for him and attacked the wrong brother? The shooter never was caught, so his identity and motive remain mysterious. Swearingen’s death in Denver was only six weeks in the future. Perhaps it took the attacker that long to track Swearingen there after shooting his twin..."
