Releasing Friday: Kansai Yamamoto Embroidered Dragon Varsity Jacket. Kansai Yamamoto was the designer du jour for David Bowie throughout the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, as he conceptualized several looks quintessential to the visual lexicon of Bowie’s career, including the Ziggy Stardust tour outfits. Kansai also designed the asymmetric striped body suit which appeared on the back of the "Station to Station" cover, and rather tragically once more in Bowie’s “Lazarus” music video. Kansai’s influence has not purveyed cross-generationally like Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto’s, but it can still be seen channeled in the gleeful maximalism of designers like Alessandro Michele of Gucci. Throughout the 1980s, Kansai released a variety of oversized bomber jackets depicting elaborate hand-woven visuals of traditional Japanese iconography. Never one to shy away from controversy, Gaultier openly courted subcultures which huddled in the fringes of society. To a present-day audience, the morbid visuals of heavy metal bands likely seem more theatrical than menacing, but it can’t be discounted how much cultural animosity was aimed towards them around the turn of the millennium, culminating in Marilyn Manson being accused of inspiring the Columbine shooters.
