Salkantay Trek - Day 4. We began the day at 4:00AM, the doors for Machu Picchu open at 6:00AM but for preservation reasons they only let a couple of people in at a time. The entrance bridge is about an hour away from the actual entrance to the forgotten city so we needed to get there early in order to make it in time. Besides, after walking 120 km (74 miles) in the last 3 days what’s another 1 hour hike? After a few hours of nothing but darkness the sun started to rise and the colors of Mother Nature began to shine in the silhouette of the lost city, and we got more excited with every step we took. By 6:00 AM we were there, at the entrance of Machu Picchu. All of a sudden, all those kilometers mentioned earlier were forgotten and the glory of this place washed away the pain of our swollen calves. We were finally here, to witness it in its full glory (along with a couple 100 tourists).

We knew two months ahead of time that we would be visiting Machu Picchu, so naturally we were very excited at the chance to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Our first wonder together as a couple. The hidden Incan city of Machu Picchu did not let our expectations down, it truly is a breathtaking site. You can almost imagine life 570 years ago just by looking at it. One of the closest things on earth to looking at a time machine . . . . . . . . After taking some Instagram worthy photos of the beautiful city, we decided to climb up to the Incan Sun Gate. The view from the top of the gate is magnificent. At this point we just sat here, pondered on the past, and took a much deserved break. Afterwards we headed down and paid a visit to the lesser known attraction - the Inca Bridge. The bridge was created as a secret entrance to the city in order to protect the city from any unwanted visitors. We visited these two sites first because once you decide to go into the city and check the ruins you are bound by a one way path. There is no way to go back. So if you are visiting this forgotten city, keep in mind to check the sites around the city prior to heading into the ruins.
