Over the course of six years I have created many images, all of which have contained a costume or several costumes. When developing an image and creating a piece of art, it is vital to consider what you will be dressing your character with. Every decision you make when choosing the elements you place into your image should be made with careful consideration for even the smallest detail could have a giant impact. Creating a cohesive and believable story in an image is all about the details. If the details work together to create a story, no matter how outlandish it is, the viewer will accept it as realistic. Costumes are one of the elements that can create that cohesion. Never underestimate the power a costumes can have on a photo. They communicate story, themes, emotions, not to mention details about the physical character, their story, and the emotions they are feeling and elements they are experiencing. Costumes communicate story without having to say a word. Because of this, I wanted to write a blog post diving deep into the elements of costume. In this post I share eight lessons with you that I have learned from dealing with costumes. They cover a variety of aspects, ranging from allowing the idea to dictate the garment to how I find my costumes.
