#MightDeleteLater. I like how some of my scars are visible here. One was from training (therefore; safe & controlled environment) and another came from a time when I thought I was cool being a woman on a motorcycle (hardly believed in gear too). A large part of this is due to how low the awareness of safety is in Asia. In some parts of our region no one wears a helmet riding on public roads & they don’t recognise the unexpected dangers on a motorcycle. I was certainly one of them & not proud. I wasn’t riding below speed limits either but this is the consequence & I’m okay with that. For a long time, I also internalised the Asian standard of beauty — a woman can’t have scars, she must always be fair-skinned (never exposed to the sun) & she can never do “a man’s work” were amongst some of them. I challenged them all & will continue to do so. My hands & face are a different tone than my legs Which is totally fine by me. I used to hide my scars with long sleeve tops & jeans. I don’t know how or when I transitioned into being someone who embraced my scars but now I proudly wear them & dress however I like to special occasions. I’m not afraid of anyone anymore & what they think. I’m not flawless. I never will be. And that’s fine! I wish to change the social construct of beauty in Asian standards which have been entrenched & built into all of us for so long. I believe the “Goddess” culture we have created as Asians is harmful to both women & men. You grow up believing that a woman’s identity is based on her physical appearance alone. Just stop. I’m not a Goddess. I am a regular human person. My value lies in the knowledge I have, the principles I live by, the skills I own & the potential to grow into so much more. My existence is just as important as anyone else’s & so is any other male/female no matter how they look. Girls/Guys: I truly believe you are worth so much more than you look. You possess the power to change people’s pre-determined perceptions. Use it wisely. You see what I want you to see. That is Instagram. I have adult cystic acne. It’s been on and off for 3 years since I stopped taking the pill (which I was on for 11 years). I’ve tried many treatments both natural and medical short of roaccutane which I refuse to take. I’m embarrassed by it. It makes me feel ugly. It makes me hide my neck with scarves or high necks or my hair. I don’t like my neck being touched or kissed. I edit it out of photos. It is THAT easy to edit you’d have no idea if I didn’t tell you (swipe to see an edited photo). This is your reminder that what you see on Instagram is rarely telling the full story! I’ve been on press trips with professional models and even THEY edit their images! No one is perfect. No one is without fault. Everyone has insecurities. Everyone is showing you an idealised version of themselves, myself included. P.s. any others who have had cystic acne like mine with advice that works I’d appreciate it!

When you’re making poor choices, choices that defy what you know in your heart to be right, you never will know self-love One of the hardest things I’ve ever done was learn to love myself. Self love looks different for everybody. For me it meant I needed to start living up to my own potential.  To start making myself proud.  To start living my truth. And not just in the superficial sense of self-love, like exercising regularly and watching less TV.  It was time to really, fully and wholly love myself–top to bottom, inside and out. To love myself to the point of waking up every morning with a heart overflowing with gratitude for all I was blessed with in life.  To love myself unconditionally–quirks, flaws, occasional potty mouth and all.  To love myself the way I hoped for someone else to one day love me.  Fiercely, and unafraid to show it. But self-love is a process, one that will never be truly complete.  There will always be more I could improve, more I can learn, more kindness I can show to myself and others. And in the vein of extending that kindness to myself, I constantly need reminding that yes, I am deeply flawed in many ways, but that is what makes me human, and I deserve love anyway. I am still on the path to loving myself and to knowing and living my truth.  I can say in all honesty that I love myself now more than ever, and I know I will come to love myself more deeply in the future.
