I had the honor to monitor a FRA-ORD #flight, performed by the #queenoftheskies herself, one #pilot being @cockpitbuddy .
A front had passed the Great Lakes area, #weather on its rear was forecast dry with strong northerly wind (A; TAF = Terminal aerodrome forecast).
Gusty wind’s not uncommon for ORD - it’s after all known as ”Windy City”.
Yet, latest METAR (meterorological aerodrome report) reported gusts up to 40kts (B). ORD‘s main #runway configuration is 28/10 (east/west direction); the #b747‘s #crosswind limit (for a dry RWY landing) 36kts (C).
40kts directly from the North would be out of limits, preventing a #landing, a diversion seemed possible.
The #crew also was worried about wind and possible arrival delays, requesting further info (swipe).
So I checked the approach situation - finding the standard east flow config in use (A)...without any holding Airport status for O‘hare was blue (B, no current issues); also the @faa had no alerts or advisories in effect (C).
For a timely 1st reply, I described the current - normal ops - situation to the crew via datalink message.
I calculated a possible reroute for approaching a different RWY (D) (resulting +5 mins / 1 ton more fuel) for them, stating I considered that unlikely to be cleared by ATC (given it crossed the approach and departure flows in use).
I also checked on possible go-arounds or PIREP (pilot reports) for the approach area(E), and expected arrival demand around my #airplane‘s ETA (F) - both not pointing out any trouble.
My assumption - based on the wind/pressure charts - was that the wind would decrease, and meanwhile be weaker than previously reported (after all, it‘s only reported hourly). watching everyone landing normally (despite all other #plane types subject to crossind limits too), I described my expectations to the crew - suggesting to give it a try.
And in fact: the next METAR reported the wind down to 30kts (thus in limits), explaining the „normal“ approach situation.
And a couple mins later, the #queen also touched down safely.

On one of my shifts, I was greeted by these two (A): FUNANI & GELENA, 2 cyclones over the Indian Ocean.. and I was to provide #inflight support for a #plane bound for MRU.
1st, I hit up JTWC (B) for most recent advisories / storm warnings...which both looked kinda favorable.
Tough luck: while her “brother” behaved as forecast, SAT image vs warning graphic for GELENA (C) weren’t matching. part of the storm’s wakes were way closer to Madagascar than fcst, affecting my #flight.
So I had to dig into further details (swipe ro pic 2). I checked satellite pics of a couple past hours to verify development, direction & speed, and my worries increased: GELENA was moving SW, towards planned route, with thunderstorms surrounding it increasing in strength.
With my #aircraft still some hours away, I had time for further analysis: radar loops plus a look at other air traffic in the area (A), which were all deviating Off the standard routings for avoidance.
Meanwhile, I prepared route alternatives for my #flight (B/C): from the originally filed #flightplan (amber), supposed to b e ok according SIGWX, I worked my way further south.
the motto was “as safe as required, as efficient as possible”, especially as the #aircraft - an #a340 btw - was already #airborne (no chance to refuel).
The red route was equal to planned one regarding time/fuel yet would still require some local circumflying.
The blue one was all clear but way longer.
I wrote an initial datalink to the #pilot(s) explaining the situation and options, leaving the decision to them.
About 1h - and another update - later, the #flightcrew requested the blue rte, receiving re-clearance accordingly.
Yet, we had already jointly discussed this to be worst case avoidance - and a shortcut reducing deviation might be an option.
So as I watched them come clear, I suggested the purple routing.
Again, the #pilots’ request was approved by #atc: as you can see (D, dashed line), they safely avoided any hazard, at just +5 mins flighttime.
And this is why #ilovemyjob: mission(support) accomplished - happy #crew, happy passengers, #happyme
