After a long, circuitous path to get here, I (Chelsea) finished my master’s in conservation ecology this week! I’ve spent the majority of the last three years studying the global food system- including the outsized role of industrialized agriculture in the degradation of so many spheres, social and ecological alike. As immutable as this system may seem, we created it (and not that long ago), and so too we can fix it. I’ve never felt so steadfast in my commitment to participating as one member of a hugely needed coalition of small, diversified farms ready to take on this challenge. Perhaps I’m preaching to the choir here, so just excuse me while I feel all the feels. Instead of attending commencement next Saturday, I’ll be kicking off the market season- and I can’t possibly think of a better way to celebrate.

I have never believed our help would come from the people + systems that oppressed us in the first place. That desire + drive for change for your people is birthed through our struggle. It comes from living it everyday. while i was planting kale this morning, an old, light skin, freckled face, black man with a walker, tattered navy blue railroad hat, came to the gate. most men who come to the gate are either cat calling me, yelling something at me I can’t compute due to their deep raspy voices, or smoking. But this older man was quiet which struck me. I stopped my planting and went toward the gate. . With his hand on his heart and one tear streaming slowly down his right cheek, in a soft voice he says, “it has been so long since I’ve seen a black woman planting in a garden ....the last time I can remember seeing this was in 1961, Alabama when my auntie had a garden, one that fed us might I add!” . With a big goofy, toothless smile he continued, “my auntie used to make me get up REAL early to plant with her and ooooo I hated it! But now, watching you I can’t help but miss it and miss her.” . He ended his narrative with, “Well thank you for taking me back to my childhood. Thank you for being a black woman in a garden and make sure you get other black girls in there with you!” . I give thanks for these interactions. when my path feels rough, which is does right now, these types of affirmations are so needed! I’m so humbled and honored. Da série experimentos em casa. Queijinho básico: leite de vaca ordenhado no dia (mas pasteurizado, pois viajou um bocado), fermentado com nossa coalhada natural de leite cru, coalho e sal. Pouca prensa, cura de 10 dias. Mofo natural, massa macia. Aquele café com queijo de respeito! . Experimenting at home. Basic rennet cheese: cow’s milk freshly milked (but pasteurized because it travelled a bit to get to us), fermented with our natural ferment made from raw milk, rennet and salt. Slightly pressed, cured for 10 days. Natural mold, soft interior. Perfect to accompany some coffee at breakfast or afternoon break.
