PRESTON LADIES (Dick Kerr’s World Champions) VS FRANCE LADIES / 23rd June 1948 / International in aid of the British Legion Hull Branch / Price: 3d / To celebrate the Lionesses reaching tomorrow’s quarter final of the World Cup, we are delighted to share this simply beautiful programme design from over 70 years ago, when women’s football was already well underway and a few lasses from Preston had secured world domination In 1914, Dick Kerr & Co’s locomotive factory began drafting in local women to help produce war ammunition. To keep up morale and to meet production standards, staff were encouraged to play football — and it turned out that the ladies were pretty good, beating groups of burley male factory workers in the process. And so Dick Kerr’s Ladies F.C. was born Led by manager Alfred Frankland, the team quickly attracted attention; intact 10,000 fans witnessed their 4-0 victory over Arundel Coulthard Factory! By 1920 they were on a tour of France playing the first recognised women’s international where they won 4-0. The girls returned heroes, and the tour generated great publicity. On boxing day later that year, 53,000 spectators came to watch Kerr’s ladies play St Helens Ladies at Goodison Park. It was in games like these that a left footed 15 year old called Lily Parr made her name (pictured) ⚽️ For the next 32 years, Lily dominated the game, scoring 986 goals in the process whilst holding down a job as a nurse in ‘Whittingham Mental Hospital’ Standing at 5ft 10in, her strength was her greatest asset with a “kick like a mule”. She even broke a keepers arm once. In her later playing years she slowly retreated from her forward position to become an occasional keeper, as seen in today’s programme share. RUCH CHORZOW vs SAINT ETIENNE / 5th March 1975 / European Cup Quater Finals 1st Leg / After some seriously satisfying giant killings and remarkable comebacks in the Round of the Last 16, we are hoping for more of the same from the Champions League Quarters This incredible cover design was created by some mastermind of design in Southern Poland in the Mid 70s for Ruch Chorzów, who despite currently sitting low down in Poland’s Liga 2, are one of the most successful teams in polish football! With a cover design that conjures up images of communist Europe, the inside tells a similar story, with a double page advert of sorts for a state-run tourist company for the working-class, in the province of Silesia. Another advert offers TV’s buyable with cash (3rd pic) — a rare sight in socialist run countries but common in a prosperous mid-70s Poland, which was enjoying a high standard of living thanks to The a polish Workers Party 1st Secretary Edward Gierek. SOUTHEND UNITED vs BLACKBURN ROVERS / EFL DIV 3 / 24th February 1973 / KO: 3pm / Price: 7p / The 1972-73 season was a momentous one for Southend fans as it was the first season they spent as a promoted team since 1913!
