For educational purposes only: I got requests to post more about Forensic odontology, so here it is. Also, maybe I will start posting on a weekly basis, something like Forensics Friday, for example This is a photo of the upper jaw - Maxilla. What I look for in here is: - number of the present teeth; - condition of the present teeth and jaw bone; - teeth surfaces (cavities, abrasion, attricion, fillings, abnormalities etc); - medial palatal suture and incisive foramen. In this case, based on Brothwell system, I look at the occlusal surface (chewing surface) of the first, second and third molar. First molar will be the first one to show signs of the wear (attrition), then the second one, and then lastly, the third molar. So, using the charts from the Brothwell system for attrition of molar teeth for the purpose of age estimation, this individual was in his early to mid 20s. Also, medial palatal suture (the line you see separating left and right side of the upper jaw) has not obliterated yet. It closes down usually by the age of 35. All of that, plus the age estimation methods on other bones tell us that this person was in his early to mid 20s. The front tooth you see missing was lost post mortem while handling the remains (a big mistake made by those gathering them). #forensics #forensicodontology #dentistry #medicine #bones #archaeology #science #teeth #anthropology
