New blog post! “‘Forest Bathing’ Is a Thing, and It Can Heal Highly Sensitive People” on HighlySensitiveRefuge.com
Shinrin-yoku in Japanese means “taking in the forest atmosphere” or, literally, “forest bathing.” It means not only spending time in the woods, but doing so in a way that is designed to be peaceful and almost spiritual (there is no actual bathing involved!). And for a highly sensitive person, it’s one of the most grounding and soothing practices you can use.
That’s because HSPs run the risk of becoming overloaded with stress from day to day living. Because we see and experience the world with heightened sensitivity, we are more attuned to take on others’ emotions, to carry stress from our work day back to our home lives, and store that stress in our bodies due to mental, emotional, and physical flooding. Spending time in nature among trees, through the practice of forest bathing, can serve as a self-care practice — and a remedy to this physical and emotional overload.

After the miracle of finding that my leukemia was gone because I had followed my dream to swim the entire length of the Willamette River as an active cancer patient , I searched for ways to recruit nature’s awesome healing power to restore my lymphatic system.
My lymphoma was getting aggressive.. I found Dr. Qing Li’s research on something called Shrinrin Yoku...or “forest bathing.”
The power of forest bathing comes from unplugging and opening a bridge between you and the natural world and you in your most natural state.
Numerous studies have shown that even 2 hours in a forest is an organic form of aromatherapy.
The fragrance of forest trees emit phytoncides which have been proven to boost the immune system.
If 2 hours works why not spend at least one whole night every week?
Not only did I discover that my weekly foray into the woods was an extremely efficient stress reducer, very soon I noticed my trauma symptoms, nightmares and triggers were subsiding.
If this wasn’t enough, I realized my time of “feeding the wolf” had become a vital spiritual practice.
For more information on forest bathing, read Dr. Li’s- “FOREST BATHING:How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness.”
*The video posted today is a 1 minute excerpt from a short documentary that was filmed about my journey on the Willamette..

Ohhhhh I adore this book, “Forest Bathing” by Dr. Qing Li. It is full of the science behind the medicine of being in the forest. Included are studies that show marked increase in immune function and reduction of stress, AND so much more!!!
Getting outside for some amount of time on the regular is wise and through the sense body, we can have a dramatic impact on our ability to decompress and destress, change the functions of our systems and bring increased harmony and balance to our daily lives.
While I know this to be true in every organ, tissue and connected part of my being, reading this book through Dr. Li’s lens makes me smile BIG. Thank you, Dr. Li for your long time work in this
important practice. . #shinrinyoku #forestbathing #forestbathingtherapy #forestmedicine #getoutside #lifeisart #ayurveda #attunement #naturalhealth #prevention #preventativehealth #drqingli #gratitude #5sensetherapy #nervoussystem #homonebalance

How forest therapy can affect your health
⬇️
Common sense says that taking in the sights and sounds of the forest can help you relax. But it’s not just our brains that get a boost. There’s evidence that forest therapy is good for our bodies, too.
-
One study showed that forest therapy reduces cortisol, a stress hormone. Another study found that forest therapy had a positive impact on blood pressure and adiponectin, a protein that helps regulate blood sugar levels.
-
Although the focus of forest therapy isn’t on physical exercise, regular practice can help you lead a less sedentary lifestyle, too.
-
Regular practice important
Although the occasional forest therapy outing may help you unwind for a few hours, you need to engage in forest therapy regularly to really reap the benefits.
-
“It’s like taking a piano lesson,” Dr. Bea says. “If you never play the piano after that, the lesson doesn’t make much difference.” He suggests finding ways to make mindfulness a part of your daily life, even if you can’t practice forest therapy every day. “You can take the forest therapy experience and then form a brief five-minute practice every day,” he says.
-
Try the following practice:
• Sit comfortably and notice your breath.
• Notice anything that takes you away from the awareness of your breath — whether it’s a sound, a thought or a sensation.
• If you do notice something else, see if you can notice that you got engaged with something other than your breath. Try to let that awareness move past you and ease your attention back to your breath.
