This is a sort of special Genus Profile, featuring a collaboration with @the_dinosauria_guy . This is the Snake-Whale: Basilosaurus
-
@the_dinosauria_guy :
Basilosaurus is an extinct species of cetacean that existed 40-35 million years ago (Late Eocene). The name Basilosaurus means “King Lizard”, because it was once considered a reptile. 2 species of Basilosaurus have been described: B.cetoides and B.isis.
-
Basilosaurus was once considered to be about 24-30 metres (80-100ft) in length. Now we know that it was much smaller, measuring about 15-18m (49-59ft) long. B.cetoides is the State Fossil of Alabama and Mississippi.
-
@prehistoricworld_ :
Ironically, B. isis is found in Egypt and Jordan, and many of its bones turn up in the Sahara Desert! B.cetoides (the type species), however, is found over South America. During the early 19th Century, Basilosaurus fossils we’re so common they were frequently used for furniture. Originally, the genus was named by Richard Harlan, who thought it was a marine reptile, hence the name meaning “King Lizard”. However, when Harlan bought the specimens to anatomist Richard Owen, he identified the two-rooting in the molars, and associated the animal as a whale, although he also thought it to be herbivorous. Owen proposed renaming Basilosaurus to Zeuglodon cetoides, meaning “Whale-Like Yolk Teeth”, but due to taxonomic rules, Basilosaurus remained permanent

Check out this other gem from the fossil show. Mosasaurs were the real sea monsters, especially with teeth like that? Nice example of an authentic specimen. .

For #FossilFriday, let’s celebrate with some fierce marine reptiles, the mosasaurs! Like alligators, crocodiles, and Komodo lizards, mosasaurs were polyphyodonts, meaning they replaced their teeth constantly throughout their life. Research into the replacement of teeth is actually quite fascinating, and can help us analyze how teeth are replaced in modern species as well. Instead of losing teeth on a conveyor belt at the front of their mouth (like sharks), mosasaurs would lose one every few teeth, and had a staggered method of tooth replacement. This feature is also seen in many of the terrestrial dinosaurs!
