Funerary children, circa 1880s. When I picked this up at an estate sale, I just thought it was an interesting early every day portrait of children. It wasn’t until I got it home and really looked at it that I realized the four girls are carrying a child’s casket. Apparently child pallbearers were once common place, as child death was common and having children carry the casket taught them about death. . The picture was presented by the Asplunds, parents of the deceased child, to the parents of Gertie Olson, the girl front left, her sister Anna standing behind her. The other two girls, Hulda and Mary Pearson, are another pair of sisters. . I did a little research and I believe this was likely taken in western Washington in the mid to late 1880s. Taking a break from the 1950s to throw it back to the 1860s and this beautiful ambrotype I found a couple days ago. She’s the first in my collection and I just find her mesmerizing!
