Marina @journalwritethinkdoodle is South African, born and raised in Johannesburg. She recently shared her personal journey of discovering journaling as a form of meditation, unbundling, and reframing her experiences. ⁣ ⁣ Marina grew up loving art, English and history, and was also steeped in Greek traditions rich in mythology and classical art from her Greek father. She stopped putting anything down on paper for a while as life grew full with work, marriage, and kids. About 8 years ago, Marina grew overwhelmed as her dad was diagnosed with dementia and her work became more stressful with travel. By chance on one of her trips she walked past a tiny stationery shop just off the Rue St Honore in Paris and felt fate intervened. She bought her first pilot fountain pen and matching ink and fountain pen friendly paper, as her world literally fell on pages, everything changed. Her work stress eased, she rediscovered her love of art and words, and could simply be in a happy, gentle space. Suddenly she could also tackle all the challenges she was facing with a clear head.⁣ ⁣ Marina fills her journals with quotes, phrases, thoughts that she loves or finds challenging, and uses paint to put the evocation of the words down on paper. She loves fountain pens and exploring their range of nib sizes and inks. Watercolor changed her process entirely as she discovered she could throw streams of color on a page while letting the words and emotions guide her. She carries her Pocket Palette everywhere as it slides into a little zip pocket on the side of her journal. Marina prefers Tomoe River paper as it holds ink, marker, watercolor, and scrapbook elements, and has an almost translucent quality. The grid or dotted format also supports bullet journal elements. She’s found joy in the journal format, hobonichi and travellers notebook being her first choices, as it collates pieces and experiences together.
