Chrysanthemum, the Flower That Braves the Frost! Part of the Four Gentlemen of Chinese Brush painting. It is the Symbol of the Autumn Season. It also symbolizes “The Triumphant in Life: Persistence, Patience and Fortitude.” Up to the Southern Sung period in China (1127-1280 A.D.), only the literati and retired scholars treated the Chrysanthemum as a special subject in painting.
To paint the essence of this or any other flower, you must understand the plant. Notice how the flowers and leaves are facing in various directions, with some being partially hidden by others but never in a cluttered or disorderly manner. Every portion of the plant must be rendered in its own, full character.

Can you guess what’s the next process video The last subject to complete the Four Gentlemen of Chinese Brush painting! Soon!
#processvideo #timelapse
I’m doing a series of process videos of the “Four Gentlemen of Chinese Brush Painting”.
Here’s the first one - the Bamboo! It represents summer and was the first subject to be painted by old China’s earliest Gentlemen Scholars. Indeed, Bamboo may rightly be called the first ‘off-spring’ of Chinese calligraphy - which is the worthy ancestor of all Chinese brush painting. The ‘Gentlemen Scholars’ embraced Bamboo because it is known to yield and bend without breaking - even in the most violent wind storm. An important philosophical principle of life.
In painting Bamboo, you aspire for spontaneity. The more spontaneous, the better.

"The plum blossom has been an important symbol in Chinese culture. As a “friend of winter,” the plum blossom most vividly represents the value of endurance, as life ultimately overcomes through the vicissitude of time. The fragrance of plum blossoms “comes from the bitterness and coldness,” as the Chinese saying goes. Souls are tempered in the depth of experience, growing in inner strength and unyielding courage. The orchid - the second painting exercise of the ‘Four Gentlemen‘ in Chinese brush painting. I practiced press-and-release brush strokes, painting delicate flower petals and mixing Chinese watercolours. It symbolizes virtue and purity, and embodies the spirit of spring. #chinesepainting #learnsomethingnew #orchid
