We are looking forward to our annual symposium this Saturday!
Our theme this year is pietre dure. The art of pietre dure, involves the cutting and inlay of various hardstones. Notice the pietre dure panels of birds and flowers in the image above, which depicts The John Evelyn Cabinet (Florence, c. 1644-1646, © Victoria and Albert Museum). #furniturehistorysociety #furniturehistory #decorativearts #artsofflorence #victoriaandalbertmuseum #v&a #pietredure #hardstone #collectorscabinet #grandducalworkshopsflorence
SHELL SHOCK: My favourite #lategram detail from the extra sumptuous 18thC pietre dure collection in the former drawing room of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Franz Stephan’s private apartments in the Hofburg. Today the room is part of the Office of the Austrian Federal President (Präsidentschaftskanzlei) and therefore usually not accessible to the public.

@philiphewatjaboor, Chairman of Masterpiece Fair introduces Paul Dyson, Independent Scholar who is currently delivering a splendid talk “Malachite furniture and furnishings” - Mr Dyson opened his talk with an early description of Malachite as a “tray of green Kidney’s” which arouse a chuckle from our assembled crowd! #furnituredesign #furniturehistorysociety #historyofdesign #russianhardstones #hardstone #decorativearts #historyofart #imperialgifts #russianarts #appliedart #russianarthistory
This eye catching throne is The Grand Master’s Throne, 1791 which can be seen at the Freemason’s Hall, London. ******************************************************* For all our FHS members out there we have a reminder for you. There are only two more days left to apply for a place on the FHS visit to London’s Freemasons' Hall. Places are limited to 20. Cost is £28. Applications should be received by email to events@furniturehistorysociety.org by this Friday, 14th.
Freemasons' Hall in London is the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England and the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of England, as well as being a meeting place for many Masonic Lodges in the London area. A Masonic meeting place since 1775 there have been three Masonic buildings on the site, with the current incarnation being opened in 1933.
The group will have privileged access to the collection of 18th and 19th century masonic thrones held in the museum and will have the opportunity to view the ceremonial areas with the Curator including the Grand Temple and view a newly created replica of Sir John Soane's design for the 'Ark of the Masonic Covenant'. There will also be a short introduction by Master's graduate Kathryn Haddock - @kehaddock - whose dissertation was on Masonic Ceremonial Chairs. #decorativearts #furnituredesign #furniturehistory #masonicthrone #grandmastersthrone #freemasonshall #freemasonshalllondon #sirjohnsoane #johnsoane #masonicsymbols ##themasonictemple #grandtemple #historyofdesign #historyofart #historyofarchitecture #fhsevents #furniturehistorysociety
Our next #curatorschoice post come from Wilhelmina (Ine) Castelijns Van Beek (@inecastelijns), Curatorial Intern in Decorative Arts @RoyalCollectionTrust. Thank you Ine, for your interesting submission! Image: Entrance Hall Carvings @polesdenlacey “Since the electrical cabling, plumbing and heating of Buckingham Palace have not been updated since the 1950s, the Palace needs some essential renovations, leading to our current reservicing project. This project provides the perfect time for us to look into the architectural and decorative history of the Palace, which is how we came across White Allom & Co. The firm acted as a decorator and supplier of furniture and fittings for King George V and Queen Mary – think throne chairs to wall lights. They were also involved in the decoration of other grand interiors at the time, such as at the The Frick Collection, New York and at Polesden Lacey, Dorking, where the Duke and Duchess of York spent their honeymoon in 1923. White Allom & Co supplied the panelling in this photograph, taken from a Wren church, for the Entrance Hall at Polesden Lacey.” - @inecastelijns
