So I bought an Alfa Romeo 164 yesterday, as some of you already noticed. It was very unplanned, and not the most sensible thing to do, but I just couldn’t contain myself.
Up until yesterday the car was owned by a friend, who had bought it a few years ago in Belgium. It’s very well kept, up to the original plastic wheel covers. Said friend had to make room for a new (very spectacular) project, and he thought it would be perfect for me. If course he did. I really tried to resist, but when Beau suggested we’d have a look at it, there was no holding back.
Some of you may have read about my youth adventures with the 164 my best friend when we were 20-ish. It all came back instantly.
For now you’ll have to do with the few pics I took yesterday evening, and some that were made by the former owner. But be reassured: this story will continue, one way or another...

▴3 To commemorate this success & celebrate their 40th anniversary, 424 special limited edition Imprezas were assembled; 400 for the Japanese market & 24 for export use. Sadly America got NONE.⠀

They were called the 22B STi - 22 for the 2.2L engine & B for Subaru’s internal code for “Turbo”. More importantly, each one was HAND BUILT by STi! Exclusively offered in Subaru paint code 74F - Sonic Blue Mica - and adorned with Gold BBS wheels - this is Subaru gospel.⠀

▴4 -▴5 What set the 22B STi apart from other Impreza’s at the time was the widebody kit. Impreza coupes look great on their own, but add flared rear fenders, wide front fenders, & wide wheels - we call that a "future classic".⠀

▴6 Let’s move to the rear wing. It’s adjustable, functional, & did we mention big? ▴7 A small detail that sometimes goes overlooked are the fog light covers. Pure motorsports.⠀

▴8 Can we talk about the motor for a bit? 2.2L turbo , we get. But a redline of 7900 rpm? WTFBBQ? Being 2500lbs, having 280hp, 270ft lbs tq, & one of the best AWD systems on the planet, some say that this Subaru got to 60mph in 3.7 seconds, which in 1998 was faster than cars twice the price.⠀

▴9 And like most true serious sports cars, the interior is the definition of minimalism. ⠀

▴10 In my opinion, this is the greatest Subaru ever built. A nod to their motorsport heritage is a nice touch, but the fact that Subaru had the guts to actually make this car is remarkable. Let's be honest, would Subaru or even any other non-supercar company, take away funds from cars that make money & invest those funds into making a limited edition car that would be as fast as a supercar, but potentially be a sales flop? No chance. Not many brands take risks. Subaru did & made magic.

“With the 997 came added seriousness. The 996 had been based around a standard 2WD bodyshell. A desire for extra grip meant wider tracks were needed, so the 997 used the shell of the 4WD versions. The engine was still a 3.6, but official power now broke the 400bhp barrier.
