She is one of the strongest women I have ever known. This is somewhat a cliche, but spare me the thought: I grew up with the uneasy feeling that she didn’t have it all too easy for herself. Not quite knowing with my child mind and in the absence of detailed knowledge, only things to surface years later... it was hard to understand or even appreciate; also because I grew up privileged. A privilege that was, in no small part, owing to the love and care I was brought up with, while she apparently endured her own battles as much as mine and my sister’s.
Only more recently, we’ve opened up to each other to the level that I now have a better grasp of what’s made her; and what struggles she’s made for herself even when I often thought she did not need to. But that was her, often fighting a solitary battle in a world dominated by a relentless horde of men and that’s what’s made a big part of me and part of the other very strong woman in my life; my sister.
If I am today predominantly surrounding myself by strong women who will hardly give an inch before they get what they deserve, often finding myself occupied with the British suffragettes or Burundi’s LGBTQ+ communities, or throw myself out into the world to even try to get a grasp of what women have to go through on a day-to-day basis, it is because of a woman I look up to each day when I wake up to find myself to live up to fight another struggle, to try and do my part to make this world a little more equitable and non-gendered place.
Up with the solidarity and struggle and down with patriarchy and any form of gender bias. #futureisfeminism
Today, I'm sharing a very special moment I shared with this gentqal beast. We hung close to his herd patiently in hopes they would be comfortable around us. Eventually two of them got closer to us very calmly and started eating. The moment I started taking pictures he raised his head and kept looking directly at us. I couldn't tell if he was threatened or was living up his 3 seconds of fame. Either way we started backing up and we both parted ways. It was the most wonderful, most soul piercing look I ever got. I was advised by a couple of colleagues not to interact with wild life, because it can compromise their wild behaviors, and can be dangerous to me or worse, to the animals. I obviously never touched a doe, but I had the privilage of having the right equipment to look at one closely. I'm sharing those two pictures because they are the closest thing I got to petting a doe.
