My body wasn’t meant to be thin. I was never a big kid growing up, but I wasn’t petite either. I’ve always been marginally taller, big-boned, and very muscular. In my early to mid 20s, I thought that being skinny would solve all my problems, so that’s what I obsessively sought out. In hindsight, I don’t blame myself for thinking this way—I’m just a product of the world I live in. When I was at my most vulnerable, it was easy to buy in to the onslaught of media messages suggesting that I would be better off in a smaller body. At first, I really did believe it. Weight loss was addicting. My first diet was the honeymoon phase. I dropped weight relatively quickly and easily. I got high off of the praise I received. It seemed like I had such control over my body, and that gave me comfort in my otherwise chaotic life. As science goes, I gained the weight back plus some then tried again. It was a bit harder, it took a bit longer, and I didn’t lose as much weight, but I was still content with my “progress.” This cycle kept repeating itself over and over for a few years and meanwhile my “starting weight” kept ratcheting upward. I now understand the biology behind what I was putting my metabolism through and that my weight loss plateau and inevitable weight gain was a survival mechanism. Eventually I learned there was too much life to live to continue down this path. I was tired of feeling anxiety in social situations or avoiding them altogether because of food. When my weight started creeping up yet again out of the blue last year, I knew I had hit diet bottom and needed help. If I wasn’t going to be skinny when I was heavily restricting my food, I was never going to be skinny. I realized that my desire to be thin was a proxy for what I really wanted—to be loved, to be happy, and to be accepted. I was hopeful there was a way to live a fulfilling life without being chronically hungry, anxious around food, and generally miserable about my body, and luckily there was. I wish I had some profound story about how I found the intuitive eating community, but I honestly don’t remember. I’m just so glad that I did.

21 WEEKS Baby is the size of a carrot and her kicks are stronger lately. My Thyroid levels are in check! This mama has started the transition into a dairy free & gluten free life! B12 shots might be in my future (SOON) bc let’s be honest, hoshimotos kicks your booty. Just because things look okay on the outside, doesn’t mean it is. I’m a high functioning person who doesn’t let anything knock me down. Here’s to a new healthy lifestyle & to being pregnant, bc this is probably the last time. #hoshimotosdisease #hypothyroidism #gainingweight #21weekspregnant #yellow #dressthebump #mama #momofgirls

Double tap for GAINZ ❤️ Two and a half years ago in the bottom photo I was leaaaaaaaan. You can see it in my back with a more cut look.⠀ ⠀ I had focused for 6 months on doing a lot of cardio as well as eating in a caloric deficit and then at maintenance.⠀ ⠀ I tracked my food, I had a six pack, and while my endurance was high I wasn’t very strong.⠀ ⠀ I’ve spent the last couple years focusing more on strength and performance rather than leanness. I eat more, do less cardio and am A LOT stronger.⠀ ⠀ And honestly I like how I look and feel with a little higher body fat percentage.⠀ ⠀ Neither of these is “better”, just different.⠀ ⠀ Different goals. Different focus. Both which were intentional.⠀ ⠀ You may be thinking, “I want to look like the bottom photo.” Cool. You get to pick your goals and work toward them!⠀ ⠀ For me, I don’t think I will ever go back to being so lean. I LIKE the way I look now. And I LIKE the way I feel. And I LIKE that I am a bad-a in the gym.⠀ ⠀ And frankly all those things are way more important to me than a six pack.⠀ ⠀ Plus, my husband isn’t a fan of me super lean, so he definitely supports a higher body fat percentage. ⠀ ⠀ OWN YOUR GOALS. And be intentional about what you want to create in your life.⠀ ⠀ ✨How has your body changed in the last 2 years? Has it been intentional or accidental?✨ Top by @rachelclarephotography
