With shows this past month in Los Angeles where @art_angels presented “Showtime”, followed by “Swept Away” in Malmo, Sweden across the bridge from Copenhagen, then “Collectors Only” in Munich @immagis_photography to launch our latest collaboration with @teneuespublishing with the introduction by Swiss Art Auctioneer and Collector @simondepury who wrote this introduction to “Before They Were Famous” : ~ ~ “Back in the days when I was the owner of the auction house Phillips de Pury and Company one of my favorite tasks was to approve the covers for our auction catalogs that were considered to be the most beautiful in the industry. One day the head of our photography department submitted a very striking image for the cover. I loved it and instantly approved its use as cover and asked who was the artist. I was given the name David Drebin. I was not familiar with his work at the time. I started following his work and career and was stuck in his singular vision. The subtle eroticism in his work adds to the infinite charm and seduction that is prevalent in the universe he creates. At the same time his isolated creatures of the night evoke a loneliness and a mystery that can remind one of some haunting paintings by Edward Hopper. Drebin is also a consummate master of color. In the same way that an initial pencil sketch can be seen as the first manifestation of a painters imagination, Drebin’s Polaroids and Contact Sheets demonstrate how his total original approach is spontaneously formed in his head. His photographs make me dream and I fill in my head the script for the narrative they evoke. In painting as in photography I have always had a particular fascination for artists who were able to skillfully render the world of the night. We were happy to attend the opening of the Arman exhibition “Nouvel état des choses” at the Musée de Vence, Arman’s hometown in France. Always lovely to see you Corice Arman! The exhibition runs from June 29 to December 15, 2019.
