Retinal Ganglions are the specialized optical neurons that transmit light information from retina to the brain via the optic nerve. Worldwide 70 million people suffer from glaucoma where many people are unaware and undiagnosed. . . A lot of research indicates gene therapy could be propitious to treat this disease. One of the major breakthroughs in the field is to be able to check the transfer of the correct gene by a friendly virus to the retina via a special imaging technique called large-scale mosaic confocal microscopy. . . In a recent study, researchers at UCSD school of medicine and Shiley Eye Institute engineered adeno associated virus (AAV2) with a dummy gene tagged with GFP and transferred to retinal ganglion cells. The above image is a mosaic confocal micrograph of a mouse retina, the blue dots indicate Brn3a, a marker for retinal ganglion cells, yellow had overlaid most of the blue, indicating the dummy gene had been selectively transferred into retinal ganglion cells. .
