Memories of what the bean arch looked like last week when it was still vertical The arch may have let me down but the pumpkins haven’t! They’ve been curing off nicely in the sun and getting ready for their winter storage. This is an important little step if you plan to keep your pumpkins for eating throughout winter. It hardens the skin and will stop your pumpkins from prematurely rotting and turning into an unpleasant puddle (who else has been there? ) It’s easy to do so worth the time in making sure you get to eat all of your lovely harvest. I wait until all the vines have completely died off and leave a large piece attached for the stem. This is important as it helps seal off the top of your pumpkin Give it a quick wipe down with white vinegar and brush off the worst of the dirt Leave in a sunny spot outside with some airflow all around it. I don’t let it them get wet but am interested to hear your thoughts on this After a couple of weeks they’re ready to put inside for storage. I like to store mine with good airflow and they are on wire racks. I have stored them on the floor and they’ve been fine for a few months. Just keep them out of the sun and check them more often. Eat any that are stemless or have soft spots first as they won’t store well Check them every month for signs of softness (and admiration if you like to admire your pumpkins like I do ) The lovely specimens pictured here are some of the Musquee de Provence with a cheeky Queensland Blue in the corner
