I got a call from my dad this week. At first, I thought he just wanted to chat for a bit and catch up. We really don’t talk on the phone all that often. After a while of catching up on gardening and how his new business is going and how things are back home, he shifted to a more serious subject. He had called to apologize to me because he felt as though he hadn’t treated me fairly as a result of me being gay. He felt as though he had let me down while growing up and not given me the attention or the credit I deserved as his child for the fact that I was ~different~. He wanted me to know that even though his religious beliefs still dictate that he can’t see homosexuality as a moral lifestyle, he doesn’t want me to think that he loves me any less for it—that he’s happy that I’m happy. I let him know he had nothing to apologize for, and that most of the qualities I get complimented on on a regular basis (my gardening/farm abilities, my work ethic, my level-headedness in stressful and tense situations) were things that I learned from him. They’re things that shaped me and made me the type of person that Juan could fall in love with. That phone call was a great way to round out May and enter Pride month. It put to rest the unease I still sort of felt in the back of my head regarding how he sees my relationship with Juan, and I’m glad, because we’ve had a really good one for almost four years now. He’s a good man who made me a good man who could find a good man. And I’m happy.
