Stage 04: Innertkirchen - Sustenpass - Intschi ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This bike trip has been an adventure full of new „favorites“ and now also „firsts“! Today was the first time ever I saw a glacier up close (not like touching-close but squinting-to-see-it-close) - the Sustenhorn! My motto on the bike was: can I even go slower than diss? It was a rest day. Rest days are for the easy stuff. I faced a 28km mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. Taking that for a rest day is so me. But guess what? I was able to keep my heart rate way below threshold despite some 10% grades and pushing a little harder riding out of the saddle. (There goes the „rest“ in rest day! ) Only that one time when I was fighting of a horse fly I went in the red...‍♀️ I feel like a couple weeks ago when riding in the Dolomites on my „new legs“ when all of a sudden everything was easy, I could sustain watts, and my heart rate stayed low. I actually played a game today: „guess my heart rate“ - just riding and soaking up the views and then occasionally guessing my heart rate. I always guessed it way too high. My body is chilling, and I appreciate it lots. Building up the aerobic base. That‘s the ultimate goal here! Anyway, let‘s put the training aspect aside: I never heard too much of Sustenpass but it is a true gem. A bit different views today, coming out of a lush green valley covered in tall trees, the clouds were sitting low from the morning rain, until the sky cleared up and I pedaled closer and closer to the peak. First passing the tree line, then watching the rivers grow louder and stronger, feeling the air a little fresher with every hair pin bend, all the way up until all of a sudden you see that pile of snow being a gigantic glacier! I took a long break up there to soak up all details. The sparkling color, the stream of water running down to a lake, the clouds playing with the very tip of the peak. So many distractions again while riding the bike, I preferred to sit and rest, and enjoy it all for a long moment. Stage 10: Herrieden - Volkach - Schweinfurt ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ WHAT A STAGE! The last day of traveling definitely had some big surprises for me, and ended totally different than anticipated! Let me start from the very beginning: I started super motivated after a really good breakfast, and while noticing that it wouldn’t be too hot as the sky was quite cloudy. The scenery was very similar to that of the last two days. Lots of forests and long fields of grain and corn. While on these stages, I usually just have the map/navigation open on my Garmin and don‘t mess around with the data. So I just rode and planned on stopping once the hunger hit me. That was more than three hours into the ride, but so I stopped at a boring lake for a short lunch break. My goal today was reaching the finish location as quickly as possible, and not messing around! I continued rolling after my break, and passed some people on e-bikes as I entered the next town. One guy immediately sucked my wheel and yelled that this girl seems to know how to ride... I slowed down at the next intersection and as they wanted to know where I‘m from, I told them I‘ll be moving to the area this week AND as I checked the guy’s shirt and realized that he‘s the owner of a bike shop I was in touch with before, we ended up going for a drink (which came in handy as I was quite dehydrated from not taking any break). But then my initial juice turned into a second juice, and then some local wine, and some more schnaps and whisky - all stuff from Franconia, which is the region here (part of Bavaria in Germany), and since it‘s local you gotta try it, right‍♀️ Anyway, I told you I was gonna celebrate today, and I started it early with still 30k to go, but at least I celebrated in really good company! That‘s the spirit of the bike industry, you become friends with strangers right away, and share some really nice moments! And as the two guys told me: you gotta take the good days as they come!
