Medicine is, and always has been, mandated to maintain social order by diagnosing naturally occurring human behavior and emotion as disease. Gender dysphoria is no exception. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• this isn’t the first time gender has been medicalized. it wasn’t that long ago that the medical community diagnosed and regulated women’s health based on gender roles and stereotypes. In the 19th & 20th centuries, someone assigned female at birth who held traits that did not fit into the stereotype of what it meant to be a woman was diagnosed with a “female illness” and treated medically. Identified symptoms for female illnesses were characteristics such as being self-centered, assertive, aggressive, sexual, and lacking maternal qualities. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• information about female illnesses became so widespread and accessible (particularly given the time in history), women would often seek out medical help and voluntary hospitalization when they recognized these characteristics in themselves. Self-diagnosis was very common. Women who did not go see doctors reported suppressing “unfeminine” traits out of fear. Doctors believed that changing a woman’s reproductive functioning through surgery and hormone management would return a woman to her “proper” role in society and cure her. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• what the medial community used as evidence of mental illness was actually healthy natural human behavior that threatened social structure, gender roles, medical practice, and ideals about womanhood and femininity. Isn’t it a hero’s job to save people? ❄️ • From the first day of WonderCon last week! This was a really fun cosplay to do, cuz I love MHA, and I got to figure out how I wanted to do the makeup! I decided I wanted it to be a mixture of looking realistic but still with an animated stylized vibe, so this is what I came up with! • ❄️: used the @silverrain.studio Ice Fx kit as well as added it to some large false lashes (Secretive lashes by @morphebrushes) before applying them : stippled 3D Degree silicon around eye for some texture then fleckled @skinillustratorofficial alcohol paints on top with a toothbrush • by @camerakeaggy #genderbenttodoroki
