We’re coming to the end of the first part of our recent, unanticipated journey, @mmaren and I. It has been a few years now of unanticipated journeys. First, the discovery about my dad, my secret history, my identity. Then the exploration, the research to understand as much about it as I could. The writing of Inheritance. And then, just as Inheritance began finding its way so beautifully into readers’ hands, @mmaren’s health suddenly teetered on the edge. What does it all mean? I don’t pretend to know. But I will say this: I was described in a fantastic @bookforum piece that just came out as “a public contemplative.” And I realized with a start that this is true. The work of my life has been to contemplate, often in public. It’s a great privilege to be able to do this, and to have you all along with me on this winding path. Soon we will be home, at least for a little while, in our own bed, beneath our own roof, surrounded by our books, music, our dog curled up between us on the couch. A pause. A respite. I’ll be back on the road shortly: Milwaukee, Chicago, Boulder, Denver, Aspen, Atlanta. Coming your way! I’d love to see you. Now, more than ever.
