Personal Post: Back in May, I shared the story of going on a little road trip in search of the burial site of my grandfather’s sister, Helen Christell (1911-1919), who died just weeks shy of her 8th birthday. At the time we were shocked to find her grave unmarked...it didn’t ring true to my mother that her grandmother would bury her beloved daughter without a marker...but later in the day uncovered, with the help of a terrific man named Charlie, that indeed there was an old headstone there, it had just been buried due to cemetery neglect probably decades ago (the cemetery is beautifully maintained today). We elected to have the original stone removed and cleaned, then placed in a cement casing which added an upright monument so that, hopefully, little Helen’s grave will never get lost or covered again. We returned to Vernon, TX, which is best known as the birthplace of music legend Roy Orbison (1936-1988), yesterday and I wanted to share my pictures of the updated marker (it started raining so the last 2 pictures show water drops on the stone ). It has been an amazing journey for me the past few months and I’ve been stunned by the amount of information I’ve been able to uncover about a little girl who died nearly 100 years ago. Little Helen (I’ve realized, frozen in time by her untimely death, her mother forever called her “little Helen” ) loved to pick sunbeams (AKA sunflowers), had a featured role in her Kindergarten class play, and gave her younger sister, Elizabeth (1915-1997), a nickname that was used for the rest of Elizabeth’s life. One of the sources I had for this information, was a remarkable recording made in 1971 with Helen’s mother (my great-grandmother). Ninety-two at the time she made the recording, my father had the incredible foresight to record oral histories with family members (and, in this case, my mother’s family members). All of these recordings are a gift beyond measure. In this digital age, we often take for granted that pictures, stories, etc. will be preserved, but there is no substitute for hearing a story in the voice and words of those who lived it. (Cont. in comments...)
Creating a circle of history - one of the inspiring projects from #thepaintedartjournal book by @jeanneoliver for some reason I prepped this page weeks ago and never had the drive to return to it. After all the layers and pieces have come together I admit I enjoy this project, but my mind is picking it apart. That’s interesting to me because I have memories of both my grandma and my mom being overly critical of things they made. Funny how that surfaced while putting this circle together. .
