On #ThisDayinHistory 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg ends. It was the largest military conflict in North American history, an epic clash of Union and Confederate that only lasted three days. The battle was a defeat for the Confederacy, but casualties were awful on both sides. Union casualties numbered 23,000, while the Confederate side lost some 28,000 men–more than a third of Lee’s army. Crushed by the defeat at Gettysburg, Lee offered his resignation to President Jefferson Davis, but was refused. Though the great Confederate general would go on to win other victories, the Battle of Gettysburg irrevocably turned the tide of the Civil War in the Union’s favor. #CivilWar #Gettysburg #USHistory #history

This cannon, part of Dearing's Battalion and of Pickett's Division would have seen action from this area on Seminary Ridge during July 3 and 4. Major James Dearing, a Virginian, resigned from West Point just short of graduation at the secession of his home state. In total, 8 members of the battalion were killed and 17 were wounded.
