"There are two gifts we should give our children; one is roots, and the other is wings." On Friday, my daughter went to her GI appointment. Alone. This is simultaneously exciting and nerve-wracking. I know it doesn't seem like much but anyone who knows the story, knows this is quite a big deal. Yes, she's an adult but our Doctor/Patient track record is less than stellar. There have been road blocks galore and a ton of unnecessary judgement when it comes to Kirsten's health. I have been so involved in her care for the past several years, it was hard for me to let her go alone. A couple of weeks ago, I reminded her of this appointment. I asked her if she wanted me to go with her because I needed to know prior to writing my schedule. She said she wasn't sure and she would think about it. She didn't get back with me right away, so I wrote my schedule in a way that if she changed her mind, I would be able to go. The day before her appointment, she said she would go by herself. She said she felt she had a good doctor who listened and she would try it alone. Well, first she met with the dietician. Those appointments never really go very well. She always gets lectures on how she should eat better. This is easier said than done. If you felt like you got punched in the gut every time you ate, I guarantee you would change how you eat too. The Great Formula Debate of 2016 has been resolved and a recommendation given to the doctor. Her tube site has been quite funky lately and she got a couple of meds to get it looking less frightening. Throw in a low vitamin D level and some labs and you have her first real adult doctor experience. I am glad she felt comfortable enough to go on her own. She refers to herself as a 'fetus adult' so I think this was a step in the right direction on graduating to a more evolved adult.
