................................... This is my 100th post, and so here’s something a little special, beginning with the b&w photo of the book as I first saw it in the Thomas G. Boss Fine Books — Catalogue Two, simply entitled “Printed on Vellum” from which I made my first purchase of a Mosher imprint in a significant binding:
—————————————————- Pater, Walter. MARIUS THE EPICUREAN — HIS SENSATIONS AND IDEAS. Two vols. (Mosher, 1900). Quarto Series. Copies No. 3 of 4 printed on vellum; signed by the publisher. Two volumes bound as one by Otto Zahn of the Toof & Co. Bindery in Memphis, TN. This art nouveau masterpiece is pictured in Zahn's monograph ON ART BINDING done for the 1904 Lousiana Purchase Exhibition at St. Louis. Bound for Gertrude Cowdin and in her 1916 sale catalogue (entry 354). Shown at the 1992 "Thomas Bird Mosher and the Art of the Book" exhibition at Temple University. ————————————————- Special clamshell case made for the binding by S. A. Neff, Jr. of the Guild of Book-Workers. Clamshell case is "locked" when inserted into its felt-lined slipcase. Full morocco case was engineered to allow visual viewing of the book's front cover, spine and bottom edges without lifting the book out of the case. Under the book is a compartment for Zahn's monograph ON ART BINDING prepared for the 1904 Lousiana Purchase Exhibition at St. Louis. A photograph of this copy of MARIUS appears as No. 8 in Zahn’s monograph. See the last picture I’ve here posted for a demonstration of the case and further showing of the binding. Meredith, George. THE TALE OF CHLOE — AN EPISODE IN THE HISTORY OF BEAU BEAMISH (Mosher, 1899). Old World Series. Early binding (ca. 1943) by Daniel Gibson Knowlton accompanied by the original cover design on paper for the binding (oops, posted upside down—sorry about that). Later slipcase made by DGK. Knowlton was a graduate of the Marion Lane School of Bookbinding in Washington, D.C. and later became the longstanding in-house bookbinder and conservator at Brown University where he met one of his many apprentices: Richard Minsky. The devil is in the details
Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Les Diaboliques, 1884 (first published in 1874). Librairie Nozières, Rochefort. "Les Diaboliques" are a collection of short stories. Each story features a woman who commits an act of violence, or revenge, or some other crime. Now that I think of it, the book has been on my reading list for ages, I will definitely read it soon.

Swinburne, Algernon Charles. LAUS VENERIS — POEMS AND BALLADS. Mosher, 1899. Quarto Series. Includes a frontispiece portrait from watercolor of Swinburne by D. G. Rossetti, a full-page woodcut of Cleopatra by Frederick Sandys, and two page facsimiles of Swinburne’s handwriting. Bound Kelmscott-style in classic vellum with silk ties. Copy #1 of 4 printed on vellum, from the library of Emilie B. Grigsby with her bookplate by René Lalique loosely laid in.

PROTECTIVE CASE
A simple yet very sturdy case made to house the one-of-four pure vellum copies of A. C. Swinburne's LAUS VENERIS—Poems and Ballads (1899), produced by the Mosher Press, this being Emilie B. Grigsby's copy which she took with her when she moved to England in 1912. The book's original flexible vellum binding with its silk ties needed protection, hence the velvet-lined case was created for its preservation.
