- Beerhunt Special - City of Ale Festival @brewyorkbeer - After another busy week at the grind, we are once again out and about in the pub Mecca of York. However, this trip out was a rather special one as we found ourselves at the City of Ale Festival hosted by the wonderful Brew York. With an array of beverages for every discerning enthusiast, we were certainly in a for treat, albeit a very challenging one when it came to deciding which of the many fine elixirs we were going sample from some of Yorkshire's finest brewers. After a careful peruse of the handy leaflet we were given upon entrance, we soon began to work through the lists, some important decisions were finally made and the night could commence. After sinking a few tasty owls, we soon built up an enormous appetite but thankfully we were spoilt by some amazing vegan kebabs from the guys @donersummer and some delicious double-cooked fries from @borntoloseburgerkitchen. Great beers and splendid food was the perfect way to begin the weekend. - 38. Lendal Cellars - Next on our quest, we descend into the underbelly of medieval York, hidden away just off St Helen's Square: Lendal Cellars. Awashed with oozing character, the three cylindrical red brick cellars are home to a loyal following cheering on an abundance of high quality tribute acts. Indeed, we ourselves thoroughly enjoyed songs by Uncle Dave of the Foo Fighters as well as many other gems. The garden, although vast, needing a trim or two and somewhat out of the way, it would be no task for the ground force team of Charlie Dimmock, Tommy Walsh and Alan Titchmarsh to redesign and develop over a short weekend. Perhaps the light drizzle of Yorkshire didn't do it justice on our visit. Nevertheless, this was previously unvisited and another unexpected gem unearthed on our quest. - 34. Guy Fawkes Inn - Next on our hunt, opposite both St Mike's and the mighty Minster herself, we come across a pub full to the brim with history @guyfawkesinnyork. Most notably, being the birth place to the most well-known, amateur demolition expert to have ever graced our soil. Hung, Drawn and Quartered, he was distributed around the “4 corners of the United Kingdom” to warn off any further traitors. Some of you may know him by the name John Johnson, which he gave whilst being first interrogated by the King's servants, but most of you will know him by the name of Guy Fawkes. - Born in 1570, almost exactly where we are currently enjoying a refreshing beverage, we find a dimly-lit, characterful bar in keeping with its historical roots. Outside, there is a homage to the pub's namesake in the form of an impressive mural depicting Guy and his homies within the pub garden. Ye Olde Starre Inne - As we venture away from High Petergate after a string of fantastic public houses, we turn right onto yet another key artery that binds York’s meandering roads, cobbled streets and snickleways together: Stonegate. Here lies a wonderfully characterful street that was once lined with endless traders from goldsmiths, printers and glass painters. And it is here that we find York’s oldest established inns @yeoldestarreinne originally licensed way back in 1644. - Oozing with character, you find a bar surrounded by small nooks and pockets of spaces, where you can enjoy a refreshing friday night beverage from a range of real ales. Despite its central position, it boasts several small but pleasant outdoor areas, which once again highlight yet more perspectives of thy Minster, which you might not necessarily see anywhere else. Indeed, its unusual acoustics, are also said to allow people to hear the pub's patrons from one of the cathedral towers. It is a must visit, for the pub enthusiast like ourselves, who have both lived in York for a few years, but have only just discovered this gem hidden down one of Stonegate’s many snickleways.
