This time of year in the Hudson Valley makes me dizzy with natural dyes. And the fields dotted with bursts of Goldenrod make driving anywhere a backroad dyer’s hazard. I’m like a tour guide for my own family as I yell out the window, “Look, Goldenrod” followed by outbursts of “Pokeberry, Sumac, Walnuts” as we drive to soccer games, playgrounds, and grocery runs.
But it’s that infectious. And inspiring. And exciting. To connect with the local plants through dye experiments. To reinvigorate garments with plant colors. And to plan my fiber projects by available seasonal color. Because there are so many yellows but only one Goldenrod yellow and it’s happening right now. Then it will be gone.
These sweet blooms were picked from a nearby field and dyed linen cloth for an upcoming seasonal craft kit subscription. I’ve also foraged Goldenrod for dyeing two skeins of wool yarn and one secondhand silk tank top this season. But like making jams from local fruit or preserving food from the garden there’s that moment when the yield starts to lessen. And I think, “Should I preserve just one more round?”.
Fortunately, I don’t have to decide just yet. Because one week from today I’ll be co-teaching with my amazing friend and natural dyer @sashaduerr and she’ll have the very hard job of deciding which plants we’ll use and which plants we’ll pass up. And, gosh, that’s no easy job this time of year either. I try to etch the dotted yellow fields deep in my memory in anticipation of January, February, and March. For now, all things Goldenrod forever. #naturaldye #plantmagic
I got to go to the place where it all began - for the 5th time. Saw & felt & smelled & tasted the very plants that God created for my family to use when we’re stressed, drained, sick, or pained.
Look friend, I get you, it’s hard to understand how an essential oil can help for your junk. I couldn’t wrap my head around it either. Until it worked. And worked. And worked. And worked.
You’ve been watching my stories intently, reading my posts, too - not because I’m so wonderful or anything, god no. Its because you’re drawn to the miraculous - and that’s what these bottles will be for your family too.
You’re going to get your starter kit eventually.
Might as well do it now.
I’ll help you figure this out.
And I can’t wait to see what your miracle will look like.

• I bet the reason that T-Rex was always so mad was because his arms were too short to get his beer to his mouth. Think about it... you would be pissed too. • • This Jurassic IPA by @cameronsbrewing is a great dinner table beer, the lingering bitterness would be perfectly paired with a nice juicy ribeye. •

Her name is Goldenrod, and she’s a plant witch with a gift for divination.

Inspired by a shirt design from @shop.cerulean as you can see in the last photo where I tried to recreate this outfit. Complete credit to them for the Plantone idea.

Everything is beginning to shift gold, rich olive greens, warm yellows and oranges. I’ve been told it’s a mild and unseasonably cool summer where I’m at and August + September will be hot and dry. Moving the lush green into the seasonal golden shift as we decline in sunlight.
.
Goldenrod has been standing out to me, in such exceptional ways. They’re beginning to light up the landscape here, in roaming patches where they bloom successionally.
.
They’re an ally for allergies, urinary issues and help with digestive stuff too.
.
I plan to make a flower essence of them in this Leo season and upcoming Leo new moon, with Oregon sunstone. From my research and understanding, Goldenrod can help one feel stability in their individuality when faced with what feels like pressure to conform to a particular social group, culture or norms. Giving us clarity and assurance in our own unique identity, when we feel not so sure of ourselves.
.
Who knows how goldenrod will show up in this yet created essence. Plants truly show up as they wish and bring us what we need.

My poor Love has come down with the flu, but fortunately I have a variety of healing herbs in my home apothecary to help alleviate his symptoms; plants that I have harvested over the Summer/early Fall, dried, and put up. His favorite tonic is the soothing tea I make of #elderberry blossoms, #yarrow, #goldenrod and horehound-infused raw honey.
.
.
Yarrow has fever-reducing properties, and is one of my favorite herbs, as it is so versatile. If I could only have just one herb, that would probably be it. Elderberry blossoms also reduce fever and research suggests that the plant may inactivate the flu virus. Goldenrod acts as an expectorant and helps open pores to release sweat during a fever. Horehound, in the mint family, eases a cough and dilates vessels, which aids in ousting phlegm and thinning bronchial mucus. So far I haven’t caught the flu, and I think that’s due largely to taking a couple of tablespoons of my wildcrafted #firecider, daily, in the colder months. Here’s to good health. ✨xx
