Found this cute gopher snake on trail and it gave a good demonstration of its rattlesnake mimic behavior. When disturbed they often vibrate their tails rapidly which when in leaf litter or gravel makes an audible rattling sound. This one wasn’t vibrating very hard like some do, but you can see it and get the idea. This defensive behavior is probably good enough to trick some potential predators into thinking they’re a dangerous rattlesnake and leave them alone. I’m certain that this tricks some people as well. I’ve had many people say they’ve seen a rattlesnake and then show me a crystal clear photo of a gopher snake, rattle-less tail and all in focus. Unfortunately they’re probably the number one snake mistaken for rattlesnakes and are often killed for it. Check out what came in today! A Good Samaritan brought us this Gopher Snake that was wrapped in a plastic mesh. We were able to cut away all the mesh and will be releasing back into the wild shortly.
